### ✨ Product Features

FeedOtter offers two flexible modules depending on how much editorial control you need:

* **Automated Newsletters** → Send fully automated RSS-based emails from your marketing automation platform. Perfect for blog or news updates.
* **Curated Newsletters** → Add an editorial layer by hand-picking, re-ordering, or removing articles before sending. This option gives your team more control over what goes out each time—you can adjust headlines, tweak descriptions, and even swap in custom images or CTAs. Curated newsletters are ideal when you want to combine automation with flexibility

# Getting Started

Step-by-step setup of your first fully automated blog newsletter.

Automated newsletters allow Feedotter to automatically collect content from your feeds, generate emails, and send them through your connected Email Service Provider (ESP) on a schedule, completely hands off.&#x20;

In just a few steps, you can create an automation that keeps your subscribers up to date with your latest content.

### Create an Automation

To create a new automation:

1. Navigate to **Automations**.
2. Click **New Automation:**

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/9ax6nxPknBQ9ZuGeY5vZ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

1. Enter a name for your automation.
2. Select your **email service provider.**
3. Click **Create Automation.**

### Add Content Sources

Automations use feeds to determine what content should be included in each email.

Feedotter Automations support:

* RSS feeds
* Atom feeds
* XML feeds
* Multiple feeds within a single automation

**To add a feed:**

1. &#x20;[Find your RSS feed URL](/faq/how-to-find-your-rss-feed) and paste it into the appropriate box in the FeedOtter interface.
2. Click **Validate and Load Feed.**&#x20;
3. Configure how many posts should be included in each send.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/WFwAOESgXz2GCgm03QPJ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

{% hint style="info" %}

{% endhint %}

### Configure Your Schedule

Next, configure when Feedotter should generate an email.&#x20;

Common scheduling options include:

* When a new post is published&#x20;
* Hourly
* Daily
* Weekly
* Monthly

Select a schedule that aligns with your publishing frequency and audience expectations.

{% hint style="warning" icon="lightbulb-exclamation" %}
For more information, see [**Scheduling**](/automations/scheduling)**.**
{% endhint %}

### Customize Your Email

The **Customize** tab allows you to select a template for your automated newsletter. It also provides access to the visual editor, which can be used to edit static elements of your template, such as footer copy or logo swaps.&#x20;

#### Using a Template

Every Feedotter automation requires a template. If a custom template has not been selected, Feedotter will use a simple system template by default.

Most Feedotter customers use a custom HTML email template that has been configured by the Feedotter team during the onboarding phase.

**To select a template:**

1. Navigate to the **Customize** tab.
2. Click **Template Library**.
3. Select the template that has been configured for your account.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/73JZlfSTVo9HRoqUzzUF" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Once selected, the template will be used for all emails generated by the automation.

Note: The customize tab allows you to do a few things:&#x20;

* **Template Library:** Browse and select from your template library.&#x20;
* **Code View:** View, edit, tweak the code of the template you are using. This is great for power users wanting to customize CSS stylings that are not editable in the user interface.
* **Visual Editor Customization:** Here you can upload or swap logos, and tweak other static elements by clicking within the template displayed on the right of your screen.

#### Custom Templates

Many customers provide their own HTML email design for use with Feedotter. Our team will configure the template and make it available within your account's Template Library.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you would like to use a custom email design or need someone to design a template for your team, read the [**Template Guide**](/custom-template-guide/overview) for more information.&#x20;
{% endhint %}

### Configure Sender Information

Before activating your automation, configure the email details recipients will see, including the subject line, sender name, and sender email address. Do this by clicking into the sender information box above your email preview:&#x20;

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/S4F4UEUWaalfkpuI9L41" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Feedotter supports both static subject lines and dynamic subject lines that automatically incorporate content from your feeds. To insert dynamic content into your subject line, click **Insert Data** and select the desired field.

### Configure UTM Tracking

Feedotter can automatically append UTM parameters to content links, helping you measure newsletter-driven traffic in analytics platforms such as Google Analytics.

By default, Feedotter automatically appends tracking parameters to content links.

**To configure or turn off Feedotter UTMs**, navigate to your automation settings and click Configure UTM Codes:&#x20;

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/qaSxFMFeqebjRCCD958O" alt="" width="563"><figcaption><p>Customize or turn off UTM parameters.</p></figcaption></figure></div>

# Marketo Sending

Complete your automation by connecting FeedOtter to Marketo for perfect, automated newsletter sending.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you haven't integrated your ESP in the settings yet, it's best to do that before finalizing your automated campaign. [Click here to learn how.](/integrations/marketo)
{% endhint %}

### Finalize Your Marketo Automation Settings <a href="#headline-60-20978" id="headline-60-20978"></a>

When you are within your automated campaign, select the **Integration** tab on the left sidebar.&#x20;

Click **Connect**, then you will see this:

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/BqOsTIpXBtbOP1XBgHkP" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

**Customize the Automation Settings**

With FeedOtter you have full control over your RSS emails. You can choose to have FeedOtter create and automatically send your email or create and notify you (and your team) when a new email is ready for review and sending. These options provide flexibility for testing, workflow, and hands-off automation.&#x20;

**Many customers start with their campaign in "Create Emails" only mode for testing.** When they have become familiar with FeedOtter's automation, they add the full automation functionality by selecting the **Send Email** option.

Either way, you can choose the perfect level of automation while maintaining control over the actual sending process.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/uj349BVJdxYLuWy44H8U" alt="" width="542"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

#### **Specify the Marketo Tags and Channel Settings**

These dropdowns allow you to select your unique Tag and Channels. The number of dropdowns and options will vary based on how your Marketo account is setup. Every field is required as per your Marketo platform.

**When these are filled in you are ready to Activate Campaign.**

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/SSTQuTmnT349Z5cw0FZF" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

In the next step we will define our Audience and add Smart Campaigns to engage our subscribers further.

### How the Marketo Integration Works <a href="#headline-69-20978" id="headline-69-20978"></a>

The FeedOtter Marketo RSS integration handles most of the setup for you. Once you click Activate, a pop-up will appear giving instructions on what do next as well as a link directly to where your campaign lives in Marketo: <br>

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/6R9qDOeDaduAtRzGVl5O" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Within Marketo, FeedOtter creates several placeholder items in your Marketo account:

1. A new Folder called **FeedOtter Programs**
2. A new Default Program with the same name as your FeedOtter RSS Campaign
3. A Email Program named **### – FeedOtter Setup**

We create this structure to make setup quick and easy. Once they have been created you are free to move and rename them as FeedOtter will refer to them by their numerical Marketo IDs.

<figure><img src="/files/lCsJBNyVxgnO8iFsrM2L" alt=""><figcaption><p>View your Automated Campaign in Marketing Activities.</p></figcaption></figure>

### Configure the Audience in Marketo <a href="#headline-73-20978" id="headline-73-20978"></a>

FeedOtter works by cloning a template Email Program and Email. That email program is created automatically by the FeedOtter software and is **NEVER SENT**. Think of this object as a template from which all automated email sends will derive from.

This is where we setup the Smart List rules that will select the audience/recipients of your automated email.

1. Under **Audience** > **Edit Smart List** and tell Marketo who to send rss emails to.
2. Under **Email** select the only option in the dropdown.

{% hint style="info" %}
These steps are **required** if you selected **automate future runs** in the previous steps. Otherwise, they are optional.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/bncgG80QyRxZGszwXZYo" alt=""><figcaption><p>Add your Smart List and select the email object on the ### - FeedOtter Setup email program.</p></figcaption></figure>

These are both one-time setups. FeedOtter will use these settings for all subsequent automated sends.

At this point our automated email is 100% up and running integrated with Marketo. Let's examine a sample automation flow:

**Sample Automation Flow:**

* Your email's *scheduled send time* arrives (as defined in your FeedOtter campaign)
* FeedOtter pulls the relevant content from your RSS feed and formats it into an email template
* FeedOtter connects to Marketo and creates a clone of the *### - FeedOtter Setup* email program containing a new email of your latest content
* If selected, FeedOtter fills in the Scheduled *date/time* and approves the new email program causing an email to be sent from Marketo

**A Quick Note About Unsubscribe Handling**

Since all emails are sent by Marketo unsubscribes are handled and tracked by Marketo. All FeedOtter RSS email templates use the default Marketo {{system.unsubscribe\_link}} merge token. If you wish to change this, it should be done in your FeedOtter email template.

For advanced settings, see here:

Here you will be prompted to setup several key details:

* Pardot Campaign
* Pardot Lists & Supression Lists

There items determine reporting and the recipients of your automated Pardot campaign respectively.

Click **Activate Campaign** to complete the setup:

# Eloqua Sending

Now that you've set up your automated email campaign, finish the automation by connecting Eloqua.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you haven't integrated your ESP in the settings yet, it's best to do that before finalizing your automated campaign. [Click here to learn how.](/integrations/eloqua)
{% endhint %}

### Finalize Your Eloqua Automation Settings <a href="#headline-60-20978" id="headline-60-20978"></a>

When you are within your automated campaign, select the **Integration** tab on the left sidebar.&#x20;

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/XQ6HBYaM2Zf5xenN69F3" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Click Connect, then you will see this:

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/UcEMHegRkBVbsxNUs5hV" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Choose the Eloqua Connection previously established.&#x20;

**FeedOtter uses Simple Email Campaigns to automate sending with Eloqua.** To learn about advanced settings for Canvas Email, please follow this link:

{% content-ref url="/pages/FRKovdBE6HMYQguVOG3I" %}
[Updating Eloqua Canvas Email](/integrations/eloqua/faq/updating-eloqua-canvas-email)
{% endcontent-ref %}

You should see **Segments** appear. **Segments** is the list of people who will receive your email. Eloqua only allows you to select one.

You can paste in the exact name of the segment and click **Lookup.** Select the segment to the right to select. We strongly recommend creating a "test segment" or "internal segment" that contains one or more test emails. This will allow you to test the full Eloqua send process with internal stakeholders. This segment can be changed at a later date when you are ready to send to the masses.

### Choose your **Email Groups**

This allows you to control pre-pending and appending Eloqua header and footer details to your FeedOtter emails. Some customers prefer to use an Eloqua dynamic content block for the footer which works as well. To do this, the user would edit the FeedOtter html template code and insert their Eloqua Dynamic Content token in the desired place, footer, etc.

### Save and Go! <a href="#headline-934-24943" id="headline-934-24943"></a>

Now you are ready to send out your Eloqua RSS Email Campaign. Once you've filled out the required settings, click Save Settings and Start Campaign.\
Your Automated Email will appear in the Campaign blocks and will send according to the sending schedule you made in your Automated Email.

### Advanced Eloqua RSS Email Options <a href="#headline-937-24943" id="headline-937-24943"></a>

Under the **Email Groups** information, there are **Advanced Options** to select if you have these setup. Please email our team if you have questions on these settings or ask your Eloqua contact.&#x20;

After activation, you can monitor and manage your automation from either the **Automations** dashboard or the **Automation Details** page.&#x20;

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/enlFWqKu6Rf8uAVBSf2G" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

We have found most customers already have these items in place but a couple items you will want to have handy are:

* **Data Extension:** FeedOtter will automate the sending of blog newsletters to recipients based on a data extension that you create. This data-extension MUST have a field named "email." This is fairly standard in Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
* **Send Classification:** Send classification settings will override FROM and REPLY-TO settings in the FeedOtter Application.

Ensure to fill in all required fields, then click **Activate Campaign.**&#x20;

After activation, you can monitor and manage your automation from either the **Automations** dashboard or the **Automation Details** page.&#x20;

### Pressing Send in HubSpot <a href="#headline-181-26466" id="headline-181-26466"></a>

If you do not have a HubSpot Enterprise Account, you will need to log in to HubSpot and schedule the email (however the hard work has been done for you). If you do have a HubSpot Enterprise Account, see below.

Whenever you have an email ready to be sent and created in HubSpot FeedOtter will send you an email notification. To send your email:

1. Go to your HubSpot account > Marketing > Email. Your email is marked with your **campaign name** + **date created.** Click **Edit**.
2. (optional) In **Settings,** you can designate a HubSpot **Campaign**. HubSpot's API doesn't allow this to be set from the FeedOtter side.
3. Select the **Send or Schedule** tab and complete the send.

### Set HubSpot Campaigns with Ease

**You’ll now be able to select your HubSpot Campaign directly from the FeedOtter interface—one less step when publishing your emails!**&#x20;

<mark style="color:orange;">Full Automation for Enterprise Users!</mark> If you have a **HubSpot Enterprise account**, you can now fully automate your email sending using FeedOtter’s automated campaigns.

If you are interested in enabling this feature, email us at <mark style="color:blue;"><success@feedotter.com></mark> and let us know.&#x20;

**Things to ignore (already taken care of by FeedOtter)**

There are a few options you'll see on the email in HubSpot to fill but no worries! FeedOtter already takes care of the following:

* Preview text, this is handled by your FeedOtter email template.
* Plain text and web version. This is also populated by FeedOtter and pushed into HubSpot.

If there is a marketing automation software you would like FeedOtter to integrate with please [contact us](https://www.feedotter.com/contact-us) and let us know.

# Scheduling

Configure when your automation runs and learn how Feedotter determines which content to include.

Scheduling determines when Feedotter checks your content sources and generates emails.

Every automation includes both:

* A **schedule**, which controls when Feedotter runs
* **Content selection settings**, which determine whether content qualifies for inclusion in an email

Together, these settings control when emails are generated and what content appears in them.

### Scheduling Options

Feedotter supports a variety of scheduling frequencies, including:

* When A New Post Is Published
* New Content Threshold&#x20;
* Every Hour
* Every Day&#x20;
* Every Week&#x20;
* Every Month&#x20;
* First / Last of the Month&#x20;
* [Intervals](/automations/scheduling/scheduling-intervals)

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/DcGvYl4ZKmxIijHzpRw5" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Content Selection

Several settings influence whether an automation generates an email and which articles are included.

These include:

* **Require New Content to Send** – Only generate emails when new content is available.
* **Published Date Filter** – Uses article publish dates to determine whether content is considered new.

# How Feedotter Detects New Content

Learn how Feedotter uses publish dates and send history to determine whether content is considered new.

Feedotter determines whether content is new by evaluating the published date of articles in your feed and comparing that date to your automation's last send date.

Understanding this process is important because it directly affects which articles are included in your automated newsletters.

### Published Date (pubDate)

Most RSS feeds include a published date for each article, commonly referred to as the **pubDate**.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/IJzXWhpqBnJF9NO0KujJ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Feedotter uses this value to determine when content was published and whether it should be considered new.

***

### Last Send Date

Each automation keeps track of its most recent successful send.

When the automation runs, Feedotter compares the published date of each article in the feed against the automation's last send date. This can be found on the Automation Details page.&#x20;

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/Sab9hVR8eUjE8bvdxq4l" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

**Articles published after the last send date are considered new and may be included in the next email.**

***

### First Send Behavior

When an automation sends for the **first time**, there is no previous send history to compare against.

As a result, Feedotter considers **all qualifying content in the feed to be new** and **includes up to the maximum number of posts configured for the automation.**

***

### Previously Sent Posts Filter

This filter helps prevent duplicate content from appearing in future emails. You can find this in your automation settings.&#x20;

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/zmsHa8hz184qGIlVken2" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

When checked, Feedotter logs each article URL and prevents it from being sent again—even if the publish date changes. With multiple feeds, URLs from all feeds are tracked and filtered.

The Previously Sent Posts Filter:

* Maintains a record of URLs sent by the current automation
* Prevents previously emailed articles from being reused
* Helps avoid duplicate sends when content is edited or republished

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** The Previously Sent Posts Filter only functions when the Published Date Filter is enabled.
{% endhint %}

# Published Date Filter

Understand how Feedotter uses article publish dates to determine content eligibility and prevent duplicate sends.

The **Published Date Filter** controls how Feedotter determines [whether content qualifies as new](/automations/scheduling/how-feedotter-detects-new-content) (along with the last sent date).&#x20;

This setting is enabled by default for all automations.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/Uoq8QIzKTC4GgnTv38DP" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### What the Filter Does

When enabled, Feedotter evaluates the published date of each article in the feed.

Articles published after the automation's last send date are considered new and will included in the next email.

This helps ensure subscribers receive newly published content rather than older articles.

### When the Filter Is Disabled

When the Published Date Filter is disabled, Feedotter no longer uses published dates to determine eligibility.

As a result, emails may contain:

* Articles published before the last send date
* Future-dated content
* Content without a published date
* Previously featured content

This can be useful when you intentionally want to reuse or re-feature content.

### Relationship to the Previously Sent Posts Filter

The Previously Sent Posts Filter depends on the Published Date Filter.

When the Published Date Filter is enabled:

* Feedotter tracks URLs that have already been sent.
* Previously emailed articles can be excluded from future sends.

When the Published Date Filter is disabled:

* Previously Sent Posts filtering is not applied.
* Previously emailed content may appear again in future newsletters.

# Require New Content to Send

Control whether your automation sends only when new content is available or on every scheduled run.

When creating your automated campaign, a checkbox for **Require new content to send** can be found in the **Schedule** tab on the left sidebar within your selected campaign.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/nvQgJJrDZpNM6dG7Ih2f" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

The **Require New Content to Send** setting determines whether Feedotter should generate an email only when new content is available.

**You can turn this off by unchecking the box.** Turning this off will cause your automated email to send on schedule, every time, regardless of content.

{% hint style="info" %}
By default, this option is turned **on,** so FeedOtter will only send when new content is found.
{% endhint %}

Again, New content is determined by two things:

1. The **published date** in your RSS feed.
2. The **last send date** of your FeedOtter campaign.

For your campaign's initial send, all content will be considered *new*, and FeedOtter will default to sending the maximum number of posts set in your campaign.

Once your campaign has been sent, FeedOtter will check the **published date** in your RSS feed and only send when there is content with a published date ***more recent*** than the campaign's last send date. You can find the last send date on the campaign block.

{% hint style="warning" %}
If you **uncheck** the **Publish Date Filter** option in an automated campaign, the behavior described above does not apply. Previously sent content may reappear in emails, and older articles can be re-used regardless of when they were published. This setting is useful when you want to re-feature content.
{% endhint %}

# Scheduling Intervals

Schedule newsletters less frequently by skipping days, weeks, or months between sends.

Intervals allow you to skip the designated number of days, weeks, or months between sends. For example, if your sending a weekly newsletter but only want the campaign to run every two weeks, you would use intervals to skip sending your newsletter every other week.

{% hint style="warning" %}
This feature is **not** compatible with first-last scheduling at this time. All other sending frequencies are able to use Intervals.
{% endhint %}

## How it Works

1. **Edit an existing automation** or create a new one. Navigate to the **Schedule** tab.
2. Select **Show Advanced Options** at the very bottom of the Schedule tab, under the Next button. You'll see a box for **Intervals** appear.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/5Th55ANFn5pIdhv4DLfR" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

1. Type the number of sending intervals you'd like skipped in your sending frequency in the box provided.

{% hint style="info" %}
When set to **0**, intervals are not being used.
{% endhint %}

## Example Use Cases

Here are a few example use cases that demonstrate how to set the interval frequency.

### Example: Biweekly Newsletter

To send a newsletter every other Tuesday:

1. Set the schedule to **Every Week**.
2. Select **Tuesday**.
3. Set **Interval = 1**.

Feedotter will skip one week between sends.

### Example: Quarterly Newsletter

To send a newsletter every three months:

1. Set the schedule to **Every Month**.
2. Select the desired day and time.
3. Set **Interval = 2**.

Feedotter will skip two monthly occurrences before sending again.

### Example: Every Six Months

To send a newsletter every six months:

1. Set the schedule to **Every Month**.
2. Select the desired day and time.
3. Set **Interval = 5**.

Feedotter will skip five monthly occurrences before sending again.

# Troubleshooting Missing Content

Diagnose common reasons content may not appear in your automated newsletters.

If an expected article is not appearing in your automated newsletter, the issue is typically related to content filtering settings, publish dates, or send requirements.

This guide covers the most common reasons content may be excluded.

### The Article Was Already Sent

By default, Feedotter tracks content that has previously been sent by an automation.

If the **Published Date Filter** is enabled, Feedotter also enables the **Previously Sent Posts Filter**, which prevents the same article from being included in future sends.

If an article was already delivered by the automation, it may be excluded from subsequent emails.

### The Article Was Published Before the Last Send Date

When the **Published Date Filter** is enabled, Feedotter compares each article's published date against the automation's last send date.

Articles published before the last send date are not considered new and will not be included.

To learn more, see [**Published Date Filter**](/automations/scheduling/published-date-filter).

### The Article Has a Future Published Date

To reduce errors, Feedotter ignores content with a published date that is in the future.

#### Include Future-Dated Content

If you need future-dated content to appear in your newsletter, turn off the Published Date Filter and Require New Content to Send.&#x20;

This allows Feedotter to include content regardless of whether it qualifies as new based on its published date.

> **Note:** Using these settings may also allow previously published content to appear in your emails.

### Require New Content to Send Is Enabled

When **Require New Content to Send** is enabled, Feedotter only generates an email when at least one qualifying article is considered new.

If no new content is found, the automation skips the send.

This behavior is expected and helps prevent empty newsletters.

To learn more, see [**Require New Content to Send**.](/automations/scheduling/require-new-content-to-send)

### Max Posts Limit Reached

The **Number of posts to display** setting controls the maximum number of articles included in each email.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/r9Imj8KWDsQJVXqxbfTu" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

If more qualifying articles are available than the configured limit, some content may be excluded.

For example:

* Max Posts = 5
* 10 qualifying articles exist

Only 5 articles can appear in the generated email.

### The Content Source Is Not Returning the Article

If an article is missing entirely from the content source, Feedotter cannot include it in the newsletter.

Verify that:

* The article appears in the RSS feed or content source
* The feed is accessible
* The article contains the expected publish date and metadata

You can use the **Feed URL Checker** under **Settings > Tools** to verify that Feedotter can access the feed.

### Still Need Help?

If content is still not appearing as expected, contact the Feedotter team at [**success@feedotter.com**](mailto:success@feedotter.com) and include:

* The automation name
* The article URL
* The expected send date
* Screenshots of any relevant settings

This information helps our team investigate more quickly.

# Send Now

Generate and send an automation immediately without waiting for the next scheduled run.

All automated email campaigns have a Send Now feature that is accessible from a button on the automations table or the Automation Details page. The Send Now feature provides an interface allowing you to immediately trigger your automated email campaign. This means your email will be created or scheduled/sent based on your campaign's setup.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/nQQqfWVIgGWXETxyhCs7" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

A few reasons why customers use Send Now:

* To test an automated campaign
* To send a one-off or special email edition
* To retry an automated send that encountered a problem

## How it works

{% hint style="info" %}
Send Now can only be used for automated email campaigns that are fully set up and ready to run. Follow[ this guide](/automations/getting-started) to setup your automated campaign.
{% endhint %}

The first step is to select the **Send Now** button on your automated campaign. Nothing will send immediately, but you'll be taken to a Preflight interface to review your email and confirm you'd like to create/send an email through your ESP.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/bs7ey4FrkugbDecFlGsH" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### **Preflight Interface**

On the left side of your screen, you should see a **Preflight** panel. Below, you can adjust the:

* Number of posts to send
* Subject
* Preheader
* Custom fields (if any) in your email template

{% hint style="info" %}
The preflight panel defaults to the current setup in your campaign. Any changes made here will only update the one-off send. These changes will NOT affect/update your automated campaign settings.
{% endhint %}

Once it fits your preferences, you can click the **Refresh icon** to update the email preview and ensure everything is looking exactly the way you want it to. You’ll see a preview of the exact email and content to be sent.

### Sending Your Email

There are a couple options you could take from here: **Download/Copy the HTML** or **Run Single Send**.

<div align="center"><figure><img src="/files/5IHW0MiAAn3ZNzBXn0W5" alt="" width="353"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

If you choose to run a single send, an email will be sent to your ESP and will follow your scheduled campaign settings.&#x20;

This means FeedOtter will use the settings configured in the **Schedule** tab of your campaign (lists, create/schedule options, etc.) to execute the single send. This may result in an actual email send to your subscriber list if this is what you have set up.

If you don't want an email to send but need the email as-is, you can select the Copy compiled HTML icon or Download HTML icon. This allows you to extract the email code and manually insert it into your ESP or any other platform as needed.

### Updating The Content Cutoff/Last Send Date

Sometimes, you may want to resend automated campaigns or perform a "forced send" using the **Send Now** feature while keeping the automated schedule intact.

After using **Send Now**, you can update the campaign's **Last Send Date** to a specific date and time of your choice.

When you restart the campaign automation, the automated schedule will resume based on this date/time.

If your automations only send "new content," the date/time you supply here will act as the cutoff for new content.

This allows you to **Send Now** and tell FeedOtter when content was last send manually.

To update this value, pay attention to the success popup **after sending a Send Now.**

1. Click the **Update Campaign Last Sent** link
2. Set the date and time that FeedOtter should remember as the cutoff for future automations.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/Xt3CC9LZWs0oueHVrn39" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Of course you can view your newly scheduled email in your ESP by clicking the respective green button as well.

**Read more about the Last Sent Date:**&#x20;

{% content-ref url="/pages/9diMgNxLfHItdPYBq36t" %}
[Last Sent Date](/automations/features/last-sent-date)
{% endcontent-ref %}

# Last Sent Date

Adjust the content cutoff date used to determine which articles qualify as new content in an automation.

The **Last Sent Date** determines the cutoff Feedotter uses when evaluating new content for an automation.

When Feedotter checks your content source, it compares each article's published date against the automation's Last Sent Date to determine whether the content should be considered new.

### Why the Last Sent Date Matters

The Last Sent Date affects:

* Which articles qualify as new content
* The behavior of the Published Date Filter
* Automations configured to require new content before sending

In most cases, Feedotter automatically updates this value after each successful send.

### Modify the Last Sent Date

You can manually update the Last Sent Date at any time from your automation settings.

To update the Last Sent Date:

1. Open the automation.
2. Navigate to the automation settings in the lower left panel.
3. Locate the **Modify Last Sent Date** section.
4. Select the desired date and time.
5. Click **Update Campaign**.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/Sa2DVgtx5dMizNZic8i0" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Common Use Cases

#### Restarting an Automation

If an automation has been paused or disabled for a period of time, you may want to adjust the Last Sent Date before reactivating it.

When the automation resumes, Feedotter will use the updated Last Sent Date as the starting point for determining new content.

#### After Using Send Now

After generating an email with **Send Now**, you may choose to update the Last Sent Date before returning the automation to its normal schedule.

This allows you to control which content qualifies as new when the next scheduled run occurs.

1. Navigate to the **Automations** tab in the Feedotter UI.&#x20;
2. Locate the automation you want to review.
3. Click the **three-dot menu** in the Actions column.
4. Select **View History**.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/spQ8AEDSTwojnUcB0Skg" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

A history window will open displaying all runs associated with the selected automation.

### Understanding the History View

Each history record represents a single automation run.

<figure><img src="/files/9Wl1YXvsnpQnbww5SORP" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

For each run, Feedotter displays:

* Preview of the generated email
* Date and time of the run
* Number of new posts detected
* Number of posts included in the email
* Link to the generated email in your ESP
* Status of the run

### New Posts vs Included Posts

The **NEW/INC** column displays two values:

**New Posts**\
The number of articles Feedotter identified as new during the automation run.

**Included Posts**\
The number of articles ultimately included in the generated email.

### View Emails in Your ESP

If an email was successfully generated, the **ESP** column includes a link to open the email directly within your connected Email Service Provider.

This can be useful when reviewing generated emails, troubleshooting sending behavior, or verifying content.

### Understanding Statuses

The **Status** column displays the result of each automation run.

#### Success

A **Success** status indicates that Feedotter successfully generated the email and completed the automation process.

#### Problem

A **Problem** status indicates that Feedotter encountered an issue during the automation run.

When a problem occurs:

1. Click **View Details**.
2. Review the error information provided.

The details window contains specific information about the failure and is often the fastest way to determine what went wrong.

> **Need help?** If you're unsure how to interpret an error message, review the troubleshooting documentation or contact the Feedotter team at [**success@feedotter.com**](mailto:success@feedotter.com) and include the error details.

### Viewing Skipped Runs

By default, skipped automation runs may be hidden from the history view.

To display skipped runs:

1. Open the Sending History window.
2. Enable the **Skipped** checkbox in the upper-right corner.

Feedotter will display runs that were skipped because automation conditions were not met.

Common reasons for skipped runs include:

* No new content was found
* Require New Content to Send was enabled
* Content did not meet filtering requirements

Skipped runs will display a status of **Skipped**.

### Automation Details Page

You can also review automation history from the **Automation Details** page by clicking the automation name from the Automations table.

The Automation Details page displays a visual history of previous sends, including full email previews (click the eye icon) and quick access to generated emails.

For more information, see [**Automation Details**](/automations/automation-details).

# UTM Parameters

UTM parameters allow you to report on the website traffic created by your automated newsletters.

UTM tracking is arguably the most important part of sending your emails to clients. This is because UTM codes allow you to track the traffic going back to your website via clicking on links in your email with Google Analytics.

For more information on using UTM codes in emails you can read more here:

* <https://www.emailonacid.com/blog/article/email-marketing/how-to-use-utm-parameters-in-email-utm-parameter-checker>

### Appending UTM Codes with FeedOtter Emails

Easily append custom parameters and UTMs to your email links for greater flexibility and better tracking with Google Analytics.

To configure UTM codes, **Edit** your Automated (or Curated campaign).

1. Click on **Settings** in the left sidebar toward the bottom.
2. Click on **Configure UTM Codes** in UTM Reporting box.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/gSa4ZWfcxKnvEwLqSmOv" alt="" width="321"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

1. Fill in/modify the UTM codes as desired.

### New UTM Options

{% embed url="<https://www.loom.com/share/b76b1a8a24c941088f869da5de17a333?sid=3cd1ecea-7063-4819-8142-f32e35c81f54>" %}

Previously, FeedOtter automatically appended UTM parameters only to **content items**. With the new update, you now have additional control over where these UTMs are applied.

The new options available include:

* **Content Items (default)**: This maintains the current behavior where UTMs are appended only to content links.
* **All Link Tags (overwrite)**: Applies the UTM parameters to **all links** in your email, overwriting any existing UTM tags or custom parameters.
* **No Overwrite**: Leaves existing UTMs and parameters untouched, applying your configured UTMs only where none exist.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/cQrJqsDDkVn9NVfHWLvu" alt="" width="386"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

{% hint style="info" %}
If you want UTMs applied universally across your email, select **All Link Tags (overwrite)**. This setting ensures that all links have consistent UTM tagging, overriding any pre-existing parameters.
{% endhint %}

### Custom Parameters

The same functionality applies to custom parameters as well. You can automatically append custom tags to all links, with the same overwrite options available.

# Custom Subject Lines

Customizing your email subject line is a powerful way to create a unique headline that grabs attention and encourages more clients to open your email. There are various strategies to make your subject line more engaging.

#### **Best Practices**

There are many ways to market your email, and it all starts with the subject line! A unique and engaging subject line increases the chances of clients opening your emails and visiting your website for more content.

Your subject should capture attention while staying true to its promise. While “clickbait” subject lines may initially attract readers, they can quickly lead to frustration, causing recipients to ignore future emails or mark them as spam. Instead, we recommend using the title of the first post or a brief preview of what’s inside to set clear expectations and encourage engagement.

**Customizing Subject Line in FeedOtter**

FeedOtter allows you to change the subject line quickly and easily.

Navigate to the edit view of your automated email and click **anywhere within subject preview box.**

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/zJWAkdKlHFTS3s1uy1sz" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

On the left, you can customize the **From Name, From Email, Reply-To Email, Preheader Text, and Subject line.** Click <mark style="color:blue;">Insert Data</mark> to insert tokens. These can be used to personalize your subject line.

**Inserting Title of Post, Time of Day in Subject Line**

With FeedOtter, you can also add the title of the first post and/or the date and time of the email. To do this, go back to the **Subject line** of your Automated Email.

Below the Subject Line box, click <mark style="color:blue;">Insert Data</mark> to insert tokens. These can be used to personalize your subject line.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/j7EOzv6qPo17yRKw6wi1" alt="" width="266"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

# Notifications

Customize how FeedOtter communicates automation results and the people who receive them.

FeedOtter's automated emails streamline content creation, letting you set it and forget it. But how can you ensure everything runs smoothly without constantly checking in? With our automated email notifications, you can stay informed and confirm successful sends—without logging into your account.

### Turning On Automated Email Notifications

You can find the notifications feature within any given automated email.

Go to your [FeedOtter account](https://app.feedotter.com/home) and find your automated email campaign. Click **Edit Campaign.**&#x20;

In the left sidebar, click **Settings** (this is located at the bottom of the sidebar). Here, you’ll see a **Notifications** box:

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/P08EzIkXW1azvT3OklBt" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Mark when you would like to be notified, and ensure you insert each email address you want notifications sent to.

#### Notify on Success

*Notify on Success* will send an email every time FeedOtter successfully sends your email to your ESP. The email will also give a small preview of the content that was sent in the email.

#### Notify on Problem

This will send an email anytime there is an issue sending your email to your ESP. We recommend having this on so you know if there is an error. You can learn more about the issue by finding your email campaign click and clicking **Options (three dots)** > **View History**. [Read more here. ](/automations/features/sending-history)

Here, you’ll see a popup that will explain the issue with your campaign. If you have questions or need help, click the Help in the lower-left corner of your FeedOtter homepage.

#### Notify on Skip

Automated email notifications for skipped emails will just tell you when FeedOtter skipped sending the email to your ESP because there was no new content in your RSS feed.

# Multiple Feeds

Use multiple RSS feeds in a single automated RSS email with FeedOtter.

A feature unique to FeedOtter is the ability to use content from multiple RSS feeds in a single fully automated newsletter.

Here's what you need to know:

* You must be using a multifeed-capable email template.
* Each feed must be a valid RSS feed.

### Multi-Feed Template

Here is a basic example of how you would display content form multiple feeds in a single email. Each feed has a unique loop that can be displayed and formatted as you wish.

{% code overflow="wrap" %}

```
// Feed 1 Loop
[% for post in feedotter.posts %]
     <p>[[post.post_title]] - [[post.post_url]]</p>
[% endfor %]
// Feed 2 Loop
[% for post in feedotter.posts2 %]
     <p>[[post.post_title]] - [[post.post_url]]</p>
[% endfor %]
```

{% endcode %}

{% hint style="info" %}
{% code overflow="wrap" %}

```
Increment the 'posts2' number for as many feeds as your newsletter has. If you added a third feed you would use 'posts3' and so on.
```

{% endcode %}
{% endhint %}

### Important Tools for Multiple Feed Emails

There are lots of clever ways to use multiple feeds in your emails.

#### Slicing

Use the [Slice filter](broken://pages/g0BVFm5P8Mp6hPpPmdPQ) to display a specific post or group of posts by range.

{% code overflow="wrap" %}

```
[% for post in feedotter.posts | slice(0,1) %]
```

{% endcode %}

#### allPosts

This is an alternative to the standard "feedotter.posts" loop and can be especially useful in multiple feed newsletters.

This loop contains all posts in an RSS feed regardless of any UI settings or new content filters. It is very useful if you want to have a section of events, webinars, or articles in your newsletter and just want to display some number of items from the top of a feed.

```
//allPosts for feed 1
[% for post in feedotter.allPosts %]
//allPosts example for feed 3
[% for post in feedotter.allPosts3 %]
//allPosts example using slice to show the top 5 items from a feed
[% for post in feedotter.allPosts3 | slice(0,5) %]
```

#### If Statements

We recommend using IF statements around all content sections in multiple feed newsletter to prevent the chance of a newsletter sending with a section that appears empty.

Here is an example. Each section, including the section header h1 is wrapped with an IF statement here based on the loop's contents. If a loop contains no content the section will collapse and not appear in the newsletter.

```
// Feed 1 Loop with Conditional
[% if feedotter.posts|length > 0 %]
<h1>Here are posts from Feed 1</h1>
[% for post in feedotter.posts %]
     <p>[[post.post_title]] - [[post.post_url]]</p>
[% endfor %]
[% endif %]
// Feed 2 Loop
[% if feedotter.posts2|length > 0 %]
<h1>Here are posts from Feed 2</h1>
[% for post in feedotter.posts2 %]
     <p>[[post.post_title]] - [[post.post_url]]</p>
[% endfor %]
[% endif %]
```

### Relevant Features and UI elements

While the UI is mostly the same when working with multiple feeds there are a couple differences.

#### Multiple Feed Inputs

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/yJrXbAfhJfeV6vENDQTm" alt=""><figcaption><p>Add multiple feeds to your newsletter from the RSS feeds tab. <br>Your template must support displaying multiple feeds.</p></figcaption></figure></div>

#### Max Posts

Max Posts is the maximum number of content items each feed loop will contain. This pertains specifically to the 'feedotter.posts' loop. See the [allPosts](#allposts) feature to override this in code.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/5EN6Y1pcuzQqJhEex7Ns" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Published Date Filter

Whether or not to filter your 'feedotter.posts' loop to only contain content published since the last send date of your newsletter. The default is ON when using multiple feeds. This ensures there will always be SOME content in each post loop. When you become more familiar with multiple feed usage you may wish to turn this off and use combination of 'feedotter.posts' and 'feedotter.allPosts' loops to more precisely control content in each newsletter section.

### Scheduling Considerations for Multiple Feed Emails

Refer to the Schedule tab in FeedOtter. If you have added multiple feeds to your email you will see some expanded options IF you have selected the "Require new content to send" option.

The "Require new content to send" checkbox does several things.

1. It tells FeedOtter to skip sending an automated email if the RSS feed does not contain new content since the [last send date](broken://pages/eMPqMUMfZCxx8TyojR7J).
2. It also filters the items contained in the 'feedotter.posts' loops -ALL OF THEM- so only new content appears in your email. This also affects the subject variables.

In a typical, single-feed automated newsletter. FeedOtter will try to send on the schedule you set skipping sends if no new content has been published since the [last send date](broken://pages/eMPqMUMfZCxx8TyojR7J).

In a multiple feed newsletter scenario this needs to be considered further.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/wCsEJC58lqvlGFQIhdVk" alt="" width="329"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

**Do you want to prevent sending based on the presence of new content?** \
If no. You uncheck the "Require new content to send" option and FeedOtter will send your newsletter on the schedule you set. There is nothing more to think about.

* If you uncheck "Require new content to send" all date-based item filtering is removed from your newsletter. The contents of the 'feedotter.posts' loops will contain the [max posts](#max-posts) number of articles as set on the RSS Feeds tab.
* If you want to display posts with a published date in the future you can also check Include Old Content. In most cases, we recommend using an [allPosts loop](#allposts) in your newsletter code and leaving this unchecked.

If yes, you do want FeedOtter to skip sends based on the presence of new content you will need to select WHICH rss feeds FeedOtter considers when making this decision.

Under the **Multi-Feed Settings - Feeds to Watch tick the box next to feeds that should be factored in. When FeedOtter goes to send your newsletter it will examine content from ALL of the selected feeds. If there is at least 1 new post from ANY selected feed. Your newsletter will send.**

We also suggest placing IF statements around all of your content loops in your email code. This ensures that your newsletter won't show empty sections when it sends.

In the code example above, the newsletter section, including the header will be hidden if a feed contains no new content.

### Frequently Asked Questions

#### What are some examples of multiple feed emails customers have created?

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/N4lC0NdtxCdkEq1Wr0Di" alt="" width="395"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Subject Line Options for Multiple Feed Emails

FeedOtter includes a number of dynamic tokens to make your newsletter subject lines more interesting while staying automated.

In a multiple feed newsletter you have the ability to inject the title of the most recent post from ANY of the feeds included in your newsletter.

{% hint style="success" %}
If you wish to display a post title in the subject of a multi-feed automated email. We recommend using the "Multi-Feed Title Subject". This ensures that your subject line will always have a subject no matter what feeds have content.

If you have "Require new content to send" turned on it is possible for the latest\_post\_title value to become empty due to filtering. &#x20;

Many ESPs will not send an email with an empty subject line so we recommend constructing your subject line with that in mind OR using the Multi-Feed Title Subject to ensure your subject is never empty.
{% endhint %}

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/OhCoMJzLAsvW9GR5gToZ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

# Merging Feeds

Rather than the typical "loop" use case, you can also merge feeds into one. This automatically de-duplicates the content by URL and orders for the \<pubDate> field newest > oldest.

```
<h2>Combine Posts From All Feeds. De-duped and sorted by Published Date</h2>
 [% for post in feedMerge([feedotter.posts, feedotter.posts2]) %]
<p>
[[post.post_date | date("n/j/Y")]] == [[post.post_title]]<br>
[[post.post_url]]
    </p>
    ###
[% endfor %]
```

# Pulling in External JSON/XML Data

### RSS bypassing the FeedOtter UI

This is useful if you want to display some rss content without date/url filters impacting the content. A popular use-case for this is displaying a list of events.

{% hint style="info" %}
This function expects a valid RSS feed to be returned by the provided URL.
{% endhint %}

```html
<html>
<body>
    [% set events = feed('https://www.feedotter.com/feed') %]
    <h2>Display data directly from an rss feed. Bypass the UI.</h2>
   <ol>
     [% for post in events  %]
    <li>[[post.post_title]]</li>
    [% endfor %]
    </ol>
</body>
</html>
```

### Custom JSON/XML Data

Here is a use case where we pull in the first element of a JSON feed. In this case it will be used as an ad.

```html
<html>
<head>
<!-- Fetch and display an ad unit -->
[% set todayDate = "now"|date("Y-m-d")  %]
<!-- [[todayDate]] -->
<!-- Query for Newsletter Ad Units -->
[% set ad1 = fetchdata('...your endpoint url here....', '{"Date":"' ~ todayDate ~ '"}')[0] %]
[% set ad2 = fetchdata('...your endpoint url here....')[0] %]
</head>
<body>
<!-- Usage in the Email HTML could look like this: -->
[% if ad1 and ad1|length >0 %]
<div><a href="[[ad1.URL]]" target="_blank">
<img src='[[ad1.Creative]]'></a>
</div>
[% else %]
<!-- Optional Fallback ad if none provided by feed -->
<div><a href="[[custom.topFallbackUrl]]">
<img src='[[custom.topFallbackSrc]]'></a>
</div>
[% endif %]
</body>
</html>
```

# Getting Started

Learn how to bring your content into your own designed template and publish a curated newsletter to your ESP with FeedOtter.

Curated newsletters put you in the editorial seat: instead of fully automating a feed into an email, you connect your content sources, then select what to feature, arrange it in the order that makes sense, and tweak the details before it goes out — while FeedOtter handles the design, formatting, and delivery to your ESP.&#x20;

At a high level, every curated newsletter has two connected layers:

* **Your content** — pulled in from RSS, WordPress, YouTube, Google Sheets, and other sources (or bookmarked directly from the web). FeedOtter automatically makes this content email-ready: resizing images to the right format and aspect ratio so things look consistent no matter where the content originated.
* **Your template** — the design and structure your content is delivered in, configured once as a default and reused across every send. Our team prepares your own custom HTML for use with Feedotter. Don't have a template? [Read more here](/custom-template-guide/overview).

*Editing happens **on rails:*** you're placing and tweaking content within a predefined structure, not building rows and columns from scratch. That's intentional. Most teams want their editors focused on curation, not on relearning an email builder every time they publish.

**Watch the introductory video below to get familiar with the high-level features.**\

1. [The Newsletters Dashboard](/newsletters/getting-started/the-newsletters-dashboard)
2. [Newsletter Default Settings](/newsletters/getting-started/newsletter-default-settings)

4. [Test, Review, and Publish](/newsletters/getting-started/test-review-and-publish)

# The Newsletters Dashboard

Every newsletter you create has its own dashboard — this is your home base for that newsletter, separate from any individual send.

### Creating a Newsletter

From the main **Newsletters** homepage, click **New**. This creates the newsletter and takes you straight to its dashboard, where you'll set things up before creating your first issue.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/ipWuW63qnKlYEMRnKwUt" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### On the Dashboard

Each newsletter's dashboard gives you three main actions:

* **+ New Issue** — creates a new issue (a single send) for this newsletter
* **⚙ Newsletter Default Settings** — the newsletter configuration that applies to every issue in this newsletter, unless overridden on a per-issue basis
* **Create Note** — attach an internal note to this newsletter

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/xvTwkwY52mCmhFvsUT90" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

**Notes** ca be used as in-company documentation for the newsletter itself — the kind of context a new team member or a colleague covering for you would need: what this newsletter is for, who it's for, any quirks in how it's built, decisions about cadence or content sources, etc.&#x20;

#### Audience & Performance Snapshot

The dashboard shows an audience summary (total subscribers, net subscriber growth, integration) for the newsletter as a whole.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/W2MEbwSOTNnzEsd2r8Fa" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** The performance snapshot (delivery rate, open rate, click rate, unsubscribe rate. etc.) is currently only available for newsletters integrated with **Eloqua, Mailchimp, HubSpot, or Pardot**. If you're on a different integration, you won't see these metrics here.
{% endhint %}

#### Issues List

In the dashboard view, you'll see every **Issue** created for this newsletter, with its status (Draft / Published) and when it was last edited.

Each issue row has quick actions:

* **Eye icon** — preview the issue
* **Clone icon** — duplicate the issue
* **⋮ Options menu** — additional actions:
  * **Mark as Published** — manually flag an issue as published (useful if it was sent outside FeedOtter's publish flow)
  * **Clone** — same as the clone icon
  * **ESP Link** — jumps directly to that issue's email inside your connected ESP
  * **Rename**
  * **Delete**<br>

### **Next Up:**&#x20;

[Newsletter Default Settings](/newsletters/getting-started/newsletter-default-settings)
{% endcontent-ref %}

# Newsletter Default Settings

Set up the template, sender info, integration, and automation defaults that carry over to every issue.

**Default settings are the configuration that automatically carries over to every new issue you create in this newsletter.** Set them up once, and you won't need to touch them again unless something changes — you can always override any individual value on a per-issue basis later (see [section 4](/newsletters/getting-started/creating-and-editing-an-issue)).

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/226H2q3EeLdJVquUT1LZ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Open **Newsletter Default Settings** from the newsletter dashboard. You'll see five tabs (depending on your specific setup):

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/MCqxkFVUNoeKFulBGg6j" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Customize

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/6uss8dTdWsy7PTKaukKR" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Common things to set here:

* **Sender info & default subject** — click the From/Subject area in the preview to set defaults. You can still adjust these per issue.
* **Logo** — applies across all issues in this newsletter.
* **Footer info** — address and social links, required for compliance on most templates.

**Visual Editor**

Select an element directly in your template to edit it — but only *static* elements: things like your logo, certain button text, and static intro text (if your template includes one). Items inside a content loop (anything that gets populated by your actual content) can't be edited here — this view is for simple, one-off tweaks to the parts of the template that don't change issue to issue.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/SUWSFcfG1zLi7y69b0VJ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

**Code View**

Edit your template's HTML directly. We only recommend this if you're comfortable with HTML or have coding experience. The TEXT view offers a plain-text view of your template.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/yJoRBf9EaPkzeKIRoMFE" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

**Template Library**

To swap your newsletter's default template entirely, click into the **Template Library** and select from the templates the FeedOtter team has set up for your account.

**Applying changes**

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/Sc9LZoVJETUM19Z40VLi" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Once you've made edits, click **Apply Changes**. From there you have three options:

* Apply the changes to this template only
* Save the changes as a **new** template in your Template Library
* **Update** an existing template in your Template Library

### Layout

{% hint style="info" %}
This feature is coming soon.
{% endhint %}

### Integration

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/MY8gKPBQ8ThXNPBQcXu4" alt="" width="275"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Set the **default connection to your ESP** (Marketo, Pardot, Eloqua, HubSpot, Mailchimp, etc.). Whatever you configure here will pre-populate on every new issue. You can still adjust integration details per issue before publishing.

### Preview

See how your default template renders before any content is added. Useful for checking your base design without the noise of live content.

### Settings

The Settings tab is broken into five sub-sections in the left-hand nav:

**Basics**

* **Default CTA Text** — the default "Read More" style button text used across content blocks
* **Issue Naming** — customize how new issues are automatically named (uses a timestamp + label by default); insert dynamic data if desired
* **Notification Emails** — up to 3 email addresses to notify when an issue is auto-created or published
* **UTM Reporting** — configure UTM parameters appended to content links for tracking. [Read more here](/automations/features/utm-parameters)
* **Email Code** — advanced HTML output settings (inline CSS, compress output), plus options to copy or download the final HTML
* **Administrative Controls** — restrict newsletter setup to admins, allow/restrict editing of dropped content, toggle thumbnail images for faster loading

**Template**

Controls how the email template can be modified by editors (other users) on this newsletter.

* **Editing Permissions** — checkboxes to control which editors are available to editors working on issues for this newsletter: **Code editor**, **Visual editor**, **Module editor**. Uncheck any you don't want available (e.g., turn off Code editor for non-technical editors).
* **Linked Template** — select the HTML template associated with this newsletter. Shows "— No template selected —" if none is linked yet.

**Content, AI & Scheduling**

These settings correspond with the Auto-Curated functionality. Please read more about that here:&#x20;

# Creating & Editing an Issue

Select your content, customize the design, and prep a single issue for sending.

An **Issue** is a single send with your newsletter — one specific email built from your newsletter's default settings, with its own content and (optionally) its own overrides.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Before you start:** You'll need at least one **Content Source** connected before you can pull content into an issue. Read more about setting up [Content Sources here](/newsletters/content-sources).
{% endhint %}

Click **+ New Issue** from the newsletter dashboard to create one. You'll land in the issue editor, which has four tabs:

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/zBfScMRLA9RlN29qhkjI" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Content

This is where you select and arrange what goes into this specific send.

#### **Select Content**

This panel shows everything currently added to the issue, organized by section (if your template has sections):

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/suspQjHJo7TJxlunsUYQ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

#### **Available Content**&#x20;

Click "Select Content" to pop up the available content panel. Here you can select any content you have previously added to your Content Sources.&#x20;

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/H07RAuvJ63DEdsDevpTB" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

* **Add Visible Items** — quickly add everything currently shown.
* **Add URL** — Paste a URL (from a blog, etc.) and see the content perfectly format into your template.
* **Add Empty Block** — insert a blank content block to fill in manually.
* **Clear all sections** / **Manage content sources** — quick links at the bottom of the panel. Manage content sources will take you to the Content Source area within Feedotter.

The live preview on the right updates as you add, remove, or reorder content. Drag items to reorder them.&#x20;

\
**Click the pencil/edit icon on any block to adjust its title, CTA text, author, URL, description, and more:**&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/UWQvKizInNYVbBqrxxwK" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Customize

Same interface as the Customize tab in [Newsletter Default Settings](/newsletters/getting-started/newsletter-default-settings) (Visual / Code views, Template Library, Apply Changes) — **but changes made here apply only to this issue**, not to the newsletter's default template.

As with the default-settings version, the Visual view only allows editing static elements by selecting them directly in the preview; content-loop items aren't editable here.

### Preview

A dedicated view of the finished email as it will render, separate from the live builder preview.

### Settings

**These are issue-level settings — they override the newsletter defaults for this issue only.** Anything you don't touch here falls back to what's configured in Newsletter Default Settings.

Unlike the Default Settings version, the issue-level Settings tab has just one sub-section:

**Basics**

* **Default CTA Text** — override the CTA button text for this issue only
* **UTM Reporting** — **Configure UTM Codes** for this issue's content links
* **Email Code** — **Inline all CSS** / **Compress email output** checkboxes, plus **Copy Final HTML To Clipboard** and **Download Final HTML** links for this specific issue

# Test, Review, and Publish

Send a test, collect feedback, and publish your issue to your ESP.

Once you are finished curating your issue, you can send a test, have others review the issue, or simply just continue on to publishing.&#x20;

### Test

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/zT6rF6r3GBzEtPq7qTZZ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Click the **Test Tube** icon in the top bar to open the **Test your newsletter** modal. It has three options:

**Share link** Copy the generated preview URL and send it to anyone — no login required. Anyone with the link can see the latest version of the draft.

**Send test email** Enter email addresses, one per line, and click **Send Test Emails**. You can also select a saved [**review list**](/settings/communications/review-lists) from the dropdown instead of typing addresses individually.

**Email Preview Image Download** Click **Download Email Image** to generate and download a PNG screenshot of the current draft — useful for sharing a quick visual with stakeholders who don't need the interactive preview.

> **Heads up:** Test emails send directly from FeedOtter, not your ESP. They're for checking layout and structure — ESP tokens, personalization, and unsubscribe links won't be live.

### Publish

Once you're happy with the content and design, click **Publish**. What happens next depends on your integration.

You can also export the final HTML directly from the issue and use it anywhere.

# Publishing to Marketo

Learn how to publish your curated newsletters to Marketo.

When publishing your newsletter to Marketo, FeedOtter's integration offers **three options** for creating and sending it within your Marketo instance. These options give you the flexibility to structure and manage your newsletters in a way that best suits your team's needs.

We recommend setting up the default publishing option first. All subsequent New Issues will default to the publishing settings you choose. You can also change the publishing option at the Issue level if desired.

### To setup the default Marketo publishing option

1. From the the individual curated Newsletter dashboard click the **Settings** button on the newsletter you wish to set up.<br>

   <div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/5Td4fmpzCFMwi35UZ335" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
2. Select the **Integration Tab** and select **Marketo** in the dropdown.
3. Click **Configure Defaults**
4. Review the available Marketo publishing options:
   1. Create an Email Program and Email in Marketing Activities (default option)
   2. Create an Email in Marketo Activities
   3. Create and Schedule the newsletter send from FeedOtter

<figure><img src="/files/Awb84HCDVMtH01HDyY2S" alt=""><figcaption><p>Select your default publishing option.</p></figcaption></figure>

# Create a New Email Program and Email

Create a new Email Program and Email with every newsletter send from FeedOtter.

When selected, this option will create a new Email Program and Email in Marketo. You will then need to log in to Marketo and select the recipients (smart list) and schedule the send as desired.

{% hint style="info" %}
In this approach, FeedOtter creates the email in Marketo. You must complete the send in the Marketo interface.
{% endhint %}

When this option is selected, you will be presented with several Marketo-related options. The most important of these is the Parent Object.

{% hint style="warning" %}
The **Parent Object** is a default program or folder that will nest all new email programs and emails for your newsletter sends. This will allow you to easily find your newsletters in Marketo.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/Awb84HCDVMtH01HDyY2S" alt=""><figcaption><p>Select your Parent Object and Channel settings.</p></figcaption></figure>

Click **Save** > **Return to Edit**. Finish setting up your newsletter defaults and then you're ready to [create your first newsletter](broken://pages/hKM6z93iAWQDBsNMc6Ho).

### How it will look in Marketo

When you create a newsletter in FeedOtter an publish it to Marketo you will need to select your:

* Audience
* Email Asset (choose the email FeedOtter created for you)
* Set the send date/time

<figure><img src="/files/E5MAqPuf8bxrUdLp8TiA" alt=""><figcaption><p>See your newsletter directly in Marketo.</p></figcaption></figure>

# Create a New Email in Marketo

Create an Email asset with every newsletter send from FeedOtter.

For this option, FeedOtter will create an Email for every newsletter send underneath your existing Marketo program. You'll then set up your Smart Lists and schedule within Marketo.

Within your campaign window, navigate to the **Integration** tab > **Configure Defaults**. Here, set up the option you'll be using.

Under **Publishing Action,** you'll want to select **Create a new Email in Marketo.** Then, select the **Parent Object**.

<figure><img src="/files/JWrjxzedCsaaGnSjDrMw" alt=""><figcaption><p>Select the Parent Object for your default Marketo settings.</p></figcaption></figure>

The **Parent Object** is a default program that will nest all new emails for your newsletter sends. This will allow you to easily find your newsletters in Marketo.

Click **Save** > **Return to Edit**. Finish setting up your newsletter defaults, and then you're ready to [create your first newsletter](broken://pages/hKM6z93iAWQDBsNMc6Ho).

After creating your newsletter, click **Publish** to send to Marketo.

<figure><img src="/files/CyUOzBuO8P44uROGyWIC" alt=""><figcaption><p>Publish your newsletter to Marketo.</p></figcaption></figure>

Here, you'll be able to verify or change any preset options before creating the email program and email in Marketo. Once you've confirmed your settings, click **Publish**.

In the next pop-up, follow the link to your Marketo account. This will take you directly to your newsletter in Marketo.

<figure><img src="/files/xiutCj8NidUxw3Ff1zm4" alt=""><figcaption><p>View your newsletter in Marketo.</p></figcaption></figure>

You'll find the email underneath the specified Email Program. The email will then send using the settings defined in your Marketo Email Program.

# Schedule an Email Program Send From the FeedOtter Interface

With Curated Newsletters and Marketo, you can schedule your newsletter to send without leaving the FeedOtter application.

You can set up curated newsletters so that the editor can schedule a Marketo email send without leaving the FeedOtter interface.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/IT0VScsdGK1jyT19s2IM" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

1. Complete the requested Channel & Tag settings. These will be different based on your Marketo account.
2. Click the **Initialize Marketo** button

FeedOtter automatically creates a Default (brown) program with the name of your newsletter. FeedOtter will also create a ### - FeedOtter Setup email program and email.&#x20;

{% hint style="warning" %}
The ### - Email Setup program should never be sent. This program and the email underneath are managed by FeedOtter and act as a "template" for FeedOtter to clone settings from.
{% endhint %}

3. Click on the ### - FeedOtter Setup email program. &#x20;
4. Setup your audience and select an email (only one choice available).
5. **Do nothing else**

<figure><img src="/files/t2qCZQdj7H09ZiwynZtB" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The next time you publish a curated newsletter Issue. You will be prompted in the FeedOtter interface to select a send date and time.

<figure><img src="/files/19m8HubQPpy3rGubHJpO" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

When you complete these items and press the Publish button, FeedOtter will clone the ### - Setup Program and create a unique Email Program and Email object AND schedule it to send per your provided settings.

# Publishing to Pardot

Easily schedule and send your newsletters to Pardot using FeedOtter’s seamless integration.

When publishing your newsletter to Pardot, FeedOtter's integration provides a flexible scheduling option for creating and sending the newsletter in your Pardot instance.

# Issue Naming

Naming of your issues is paramount to keeping things organized in both FeedOtter and your ESP.&#x20;

Set the default naming scheme in your Newsletter Setup > Settings > Issue Naming. Here are some examples that have worked well for other customers:

```
//Outputs: "Newsletters - Newsletter Name - July 23 2023"
Newsletters - Newsletter Name - [[feedotter.issue_date_object | date('F j Y')]]
//Outputs: "Newsletters - Newsletter Name - Issue 24
Newsletters - Newsletter Name - Issue [[feedotter.issue_num]]
```

When the "New Issue" button is clicked a new issue will be created and the name will be set according to your setting.

#### Considerations:

* Changing the name of the "issue" in the Issue Edit UI (top underline etc..) will change the name of the Simple Email Campaign and the Email object created in Eloqua.
* You can use any supported PHP date formatting commands to setup naming.
* Eloqua does not care about duplicate email or campaign names so you can be flexible with naming as you see fit.

# Publishing to HTML

Publishing to HTML is the simplest form of export and, as the name suggests, Feedotter packs up your full email code and gives you the raw html. You can grab the final code within the settings of your issue: <br>

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/N4zAtW8ZdHEa31pUYq6C" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

This can be helpful if your integration is failing to publish or you want to use advanced features of your ESP such as A/B testing.

You can paste this code into your ESP's code editor.

# NEW: Auto-Curated

A curated newsletter workflow, but with configurable automation. Auto-Curated gives editors control over how hands-on or hands-off each newsletter should be.

Auto-Curated newsletters combine the efficiency of automation with the flexibility of editorial oversight.

Traditionally, curated newsletters require editors to manually create each issue, select content, review the newsletter, and publish it to their audience. With Auto-Curated newsletters, Feedotter speeds up this process even more and preserves opportunities for editorial review and control.

{% hint style="info" icon="bell-exclamation" %}
**Auto-Curated is an optional feature that can be enabled on any existing or new curated newsletter.** Each newsletter can be configured independently, allowing you to choose which newsletters use Auto-Curated automation and which continue to use your existing curated workflow.
{% endhint %}

**Auto-Curated newsletters can automatically:**

* Create new newsletter issues on a schedule
* Populate sections with content from configured content sources
* Assemble a complete draft newsletter for review
* Publish the issue to your Email Service Provider (ESP) after a configurable delay
* Provide editors with time to review, modify, or cancel publication before the newsletter is sent

This allows teams to significantly reduce the time spent assembling newsletters while maintaining confidence that every issue can be reviewed before publication.

### How Auto-Curated Newsletters Work

Auto-Curated newsletters are powered by three layers:

#### 📅 Scheduled Issue Creation

Feedotter can automatically create a new newsletter issue based on a schedule you define, including the frequency, time, days of the week, and timezone.

#### 📰 Content Preloading

When a new issue is created, Feedotter can automatically populate newsletter sections with content from assigned content sources. Each section can be configured independently, allowing some sections to be fully automated while others remain manually curated.

#### 🚀 Optional Automatic Publishing

After an issue is created, Feedotter can automatically publish the draft to your connected ESP after a configurable delay. During this review window, editors can make changes, publish immediately, or cancel the scheduled publication.

### Automation With Editorial Control

Teams can choose how much automation to enable:

* Automatically create draft issues while publishing manually
* Automatically create and populate issues while reviewing before publishing
* Automatically create, populate, and publish issues after a review window

# Setting Up an Auto-Curated Newsletter

This page covers all the one-time configuration.

### Before You Begin

Before enabling Auto-Curated newsletters:

* A newsletter template must already exist
* Content sources must already be configured
* Newsletter sections must be available in the template
* An ESP integration must be connected if you plan to enable automatic publishing

> Note: Section availability is typically configured during the newsletter template setup process by our team.

{% hint style="info" icon="bell-exclamation" %}
**Important:** Auto-Curated settings are configured on a **per-newsletter basis**. Each newsletter can have its own content sources, notification recipients, creation schedule, publishing settings, and review window. Changes made to one newsletter will not affect any other newsletters in your account.
{% endhint %}

### Configure Content Preloading&#x20;

Content preloading determines what content Feedotter automatically adds to each newsletter issue when it is created.

Each newsletter section can be assigned a content source and configured to automatically pull a specific number of posts. This allows Feedotter to build a draft newsletter using your existing content sources.

For example, you may choose to automatically populate:

* 1 article in a Lead Story section
* 3 articles in a Top Stories section
* 1 podcast episode in a Podcast section

Sections can also be left unconfigured if you prefer to curate them manually.<br>

#### How to configure content preloading:

1. Navigate to **Newsletter Default Settings → Content:**

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/xHlpBJ2E3jxtae1cTeIg" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

1. Locate the section you would like to automate. These will be labeled according to the sections in your template.
2. Select a content source from the dropdown menu.
3. Choose the number of posts Feedotter should automatically load into the section.
4. Repeat for any additional sections.
5. Leave a section set to **Off** if it should remain manually curated.

**Here's an example:**&#x20;

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/BNvGAuFooS4G6RLDbftq" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

When a new issue is created, Feedotter will automatically pull the latest content from the selected sources and populate the configured sections.

> Tip: Start by automating your most repetitive sections first. You can always leave high-touch editorial sections manually curated.

### Configure Scheduling&#x20;

Scheduling controls when Feedotter automatically creates new newsletter issues.

When scheduling is enabled, Feedotter will create issues according to the frequency, days, time, and timezone you specify.

#### How to configure scheduling:

1. Navigate to **Newsletter Default Settings → Scheduling**.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/zrSGf2YU1YNJlPwOwKul" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

1. Select a **Frequency**.
2. Select the day or days on which issues should be created.
3. Choose the creation time.
4. Select the appropriate timezone.
5. Click **Activate.**&#x20;
6. The automation status will defualt to on. This controls whether the automation is running or not:&#x20;

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/U6iWCJ0Sb3HmpG4fooMN" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

From here, Feedotter will automatically create new issues according to the configured schedule.

{% hint style="info" %}
The issue creation schedule determines when Feedotter generates a new issue, not when the newsletter is published. Read below to learn how to configure automatic publishing with a delay window if desired.
{% endhint %}

### Configure Automatic Publishing&#x20;

Automatic Publishing allows Feedotter to publish an Auto-Curated issue to your connected Email Service Provider (ESP) after it has been created.

This option is ideal for teams that want a review period before publication while still reducing manual publishing steps.

#### How to enable ESP Publishing:

1. Navigate to **Newsletter Default Settings → Scheduling**.
2. Enable **Publish draft to ESP after creation** (ensure the box is check):

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/RF2tzuMeNyWnmNuOkDlA" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

1. Enter the number of minutes Feedotter should wait before publishing.
2. Click **Save**.

#### Understanding the Review Window

The delay period creates a review window between issue creation and publication.

During this time, editors can:

* Review the generated issue
* Make content changes
* Save updates
* Publish immediately
* Cancel the scheduled publication

If no action is taken, Feedotter will automatically publish the issue to the connected ESP once the delay period expires.

For example, if an issue is created at 8:00 AM and the delay is set to 15 minutes, Feedotter will automatically publish the issue at 8:15 AM unless an editor intervenes.

### Setup Complete — What Happens Next?

Your Auto-Curated newsletter is now configured.

When the scheduled time arrives, Feedotter will automatically create a new issue, preload content into your configured sections, notify editors, and optionally schedule the issue for publication.

The exact sequence depends on your automation settings.

➡️ Continue to [**Auto-Curated Workflow** ](/newsletters/auto-curated/auto-curated-workflow)to learn:

* When issues are created
* When editors are notified
* How the review window works
* When publication occurs

# Auto-Curated Workflow

This page explains what happens from the moment a scheduled issue is triggered until it is published.

Once an Auto-Curated newsletter has been configured and enabled, Feedotter automatically creates, populates, and prepares newsletter issues according to your settings.

### Auto-Curated Workflow Overview

Every Auto-Curated issue follows the same basic workflow:

**Schedule → Issue Created → Content Preloaded → Notification Sent → Review Window → Published**

Depending on your settings, editors may review and publish the issue manually, or Feedotter may automatically publish it after a configured delay.

### 📅 Step 1: Scheduled Issue Creation

At the scheduled date and time configured in **Newsletter Default Settings → Scheduling**, Feedotter automatically creates a new newsletter issue.

The issue is created using the newsletter's template and default settings.

The newly created issue appears in the newsletter's issue list and is immediately available for review and editing.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/oRuXyQmMUM8nZsIaj894" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

#### What determines when an issue is created?

Issue creation is controlled by:

* Frequency
* Days of the week
* Scheduled time
* Timezone
* Automation Status

If Automation Status is enabled, Feedotter will create new issues according to the configured schedule.

### 📰 Step 2: Content Preloading

After the issue is created, Feedotter automatically populates newsletter sections using the content sources configured in **Newsletter Default Settings → Content**.

Each section is processed independently.

For example:

| Section     | Content Source    | Posts Loaded |
| ----------- | ----------------- | ------------ |
| Lead Story  | Company News Feed | 1            |
| Top Stories | Company News Feed | 3            |
| Podcast     | Podcast Feed      | 1            |

Any section configured as **Off** remains empty and can be populated manually by editors.

#### Where does the content come from?

Content is pulled from the content sources assigned to each newsletter section.

Feedotter uses the latest available content from those sources at the time the issue is created.

### 🔔 Step 3: Notification Sent

Once the issue has been created and populated, Feedotter sends a notification email to the newsletter's configured notification recipients.

Notification recipients are configured in:

**Newsletter Default Settings → Basics**

Up to three email addresses can be configured for each newsletter.

These recipients are notified whenever a new Auto-Curated issue is created and ready for review.

<figure><img src="/files/m2D0YOZ5YhO61wAAv4M7" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### ⏳ Step 4: Review Window

After the issue is created, editors have an opportunity to review the newsletter before it is published.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/wK42Y8SPZQupiJiTJOG1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

During this review period, editors can:

* Review content
* Add or remove articles
* Reorder content
* Update text and images
* Save changes
* Publish immediately
* Cancel a scheduled publication

The length of the review window depends on the **Delay Before Publishing** setting.

For example:

* Issue created: 8:00 AM
* Delay before publishing: 15 minutes
* Scheduled publish time: 8:15 AM

Editors have 15 minutes to review and make changes before publication occurs.

#### Managing a Scheduled Publication

If automatic publishing is enabled, a notification banner appears at the top right of the issue editing screen while it is waiting to be published.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/siJZxsrMJjs4Fyy4C19u" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

From this banner, editors can:

* **Publish Now** to immediately publish the issue to the connected ESP.
* **Cancel** to stop the scheduled publication and return the issue to draft status.

This allows editors to make last-minute decisions during the review window without changing the newsletter's default automation settings.

> **Note:** Canceling a scheduled publication only affects the current issue. Future Auto-Curated issues will continue to follow the newsletter's configured automation settings.

### 🚀 Step 5: Publication

The final step depends on whether automatic publishing is enabled.

#### If Automatic Publishing Is Enabled

Feedotter automatically publishes the issue to the connected ESP after the configured delay period expires.

No additional action is required.

#### If Automatic Publishing Is Disabled

The issue remains in draft status until an editor manually publishes it.

This allows teams to maintain complete editorial control over when newsletters are sent.

# Google Sheets

Integrate FeedOtter with data from your Google Sheets

FeedOtter allows you to easily drag and drop content from a Google Sheet into your email newsletters via our Content Source integration.

Here are the steps to setup your first Google Sheet content source.

### Google Authorization

The first step is to create a new Integration in FeedOtter for your Google account. This step only needs to be done once for each Google Drive resource you need to access. &#x20;

1. In FeedOtter, navigate to Settings > Integrations
2. Click **Add integration**
3. Customize the name of your Google connection (optional)
4. Follow the on-screen steps to authorize your Google Account
5. Click **Allow** to give FeedOtter permission to connect your Google Sheet spreadsheets.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you see a warning from Google, please click the "Continue Anyway" button. This message may appear from time to time as Google reviews our integration.
{% endhint %}

#### After completing the setup you will be returned to Feedotter's Integration table.

Click the TEST button next to your new Integration and ensure it lights up green.

### Create A Content Source

#### To create a new content source from a Google Sheet.

1. Navigate to Content Sources on the left sidebar
2. Click **+ Add Content Source**
3. Select Google Sheet
4. Give your Content Source a memorable name and add it to a group if you'd like
5. Under Google Connection, select the Google connection related to the Sheet you want to access.
6. Next we need to find and input the unique id of our Google Sheet. To do this open your Google Sheet. In the URL box of the sheet, select the long string of letters and numbers and **copy.** This is your Google Sheets ID. **Feedotter will accept this or it will automatically pull the ID from the full URL.**&#x20;

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/iniQoRVEyIkb7HQ9B1Dx" alt=""><figcaption><p>Open your Google Sheet and copy the id string as shown above into the FeedOtter UI.</p></figcaption></figure></div>

7. Click Load URL
8. If your settings are correct, Feedotter will present dropdowns that allow you to select the Sheet > Worksheet (tab) you wish to access and map up the basic Title, Description, Date, and URL fields in the Fields tab.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you wish to access addl. data from your Google sheet please open a ticket with our support team for assistance. Data beyond the standard fields can be accessed using the \[\[post.asArray.columnName.value]] token paradigm. Replace the word "columnName" with the actual name of your Sheet column. (case-sensitive)
{% endhint %}

9. Click Save, and then the TEST button to ensure everything is working.
10. You will now be able to view data from your Google Sheet when adding Available Content in Curated Newsletters.

### What Makes a Good Google Sheet Content Source?

When creating your Google Sheet list of content, you’ll need to ensure you have basic fields of information including **Title, URL,** and **Description.** You’ll also need the **Image URL** if you’re adding images to your newsletter.

Create these fields in your Google Sheet and start listing your content accordingly.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/tJuiu7K3dcwSgdSz1Feo" alt=""><figcaption><p>Data should be laid out with a heading in row 1 and data organized into simple columns and rows.</p></figcaption></figure></div>

### Accessing your Google Sheet data in FeedOtter

Google Sheet data is accessed when building [Curated Newsletters](/newsletters/getting-started).

#### To start using your Google Sheet data in a newsletter

**Create a new Curated Newsletter Issue, or edit and existing one.**

Under the **Content** tab, click **Add Content.** Here, you’ll see the newly added Google Sheet. Select it, and see your content available for choosing.

Here, you can drag, drop and reorder content to look they way you want in your newsletter. You can also edit each content block, just like you would with an RSS feed or the [Content Queue Bookmark](https://www.feedotter.com/articles/how-to-bookmark-a-page-content-queue-bookmark/) content.

NOTE: If you edit any of the content directly in Feedotter, this will NOT update or change the content in your Google Sheet. However, if you edit content in Google Sheets, you can refresh your Feedotter page and see those changes reflected in Feedotter.

### Accessing non-standard Sheet data in your email

FeedOtter allows you to add custom Google Sheets data in Curated Newsletters with a little bit of HTML coding. In our spreadsheet we already created a column named Custom1. &#x20;

Here is how to add that data into our HTML email code.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/tJuiu7K3dcwSgdSz1Feo" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

For custom data we will add tokens that look like this:

```
[[post.asArray.Custom1]] //replace "Custom1" with your exact column name.
```

{% hint style="warning" %}
You will need to edit your HTML email's code, this part assumes you know how to do this.
{% endhint %}

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/HL6KiSiohRxe2Po664Oh" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

On line 584, we pasted in the appropriate token. Save your code changes and you should see the custom data appear in your email preview.

# YouTube

FeedOtter can automatically import new videos from your YouTube channels or playlists using YouTube’s built-in RSS feeds. This guide explains how to find the correct URLs and IDs to set up your feed.

### Create a new YouTube Content Source

* Go to **Settings** > **Content Sources** > select **New Content Source**.
* Under **Platform**, select **YouTube**. Then give your content source a **name.**
* Next we need to find the appropriate YouTube feed for our channel or playlist.

***

### Finding URLs for YouTube Channels and Playlists

We need to locate the numeric id for your channel and/or playlists. Once you have identified the id you can append it to the following url samples and enter that into the **Feed Url** input in the Feedotter interface.

```
//Example channel video feed
https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=<yourchannelid>
//Example playlist video feed
https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?playlist_id=<yourplaylistid>
```

***

### Extracting the IDs You Need

FeedOtter uses the YouTube **channel ID** or **playlist ID** to build the correct RSS feed URL.

#### **A. Channel IDs**

* **If your URL includes `/channel/`** — The ID is everything after `/channel/`.\
  Example:

  ```
  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1234567890ABCDEF
  Channel ID: UC1234567890ABCDEF
  ```
* **If your URL uses a custom handle (`@name`)** —\
  You’ll need to look up the numeric channel ID:
  1. Go to the channel’s main page.
  2. Right-click and select **View Page Source**.
  3. Search for the text  `rss` (Ctrl+F).
  4. Copy the long ID string after "`channel_id="...`

     ```
     e.g. channel_id=UCauucVdZyf_0oRLlIu9nfxP
     ```

#### **B. Playlist IDs**

* Found after `list=` in the playlist URL.\
  Example:

  ```
  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6cg6pbzNzX-EIBhLbNwQt6r-uvGRJat1
  Playlist ID: PL6cg6pbzNzX-EIBhLbNwQt6r-uvGRJat1
  ```

***

### 3. Building Your YouTube RSS Feed

Now that you have the numeric id plug it into one of these standard formats to get the **Feed Url** to use in Feedotter.

| Source Type | Example Feed URL |
| ----------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Channel Feed**  | `https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=< YOUR NUMERIC CHANNEL ID >`   |
| **Playlist Feed** | `https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?playlist_id=< YOUR NUMERIC PLAYLIST ID >` |

Paste this RSS feed URL into **FeedOtter → Content Sources → YouTube** to automatically pull your latest videos into your newsletter.

FeedOtter will now check this feed for new videos and import them automatically.

# Advanced

There are some less documented capabilities that FeedOtter provies on a case-by-case basis. Here you can learn about these extended capbilities.

# Custom API Embed

Useful for pulling ad or external content into your newsletter apart from using content sources.

Place the following query just before the closing \</head> tag in your email code. This querys the endpoint and places data in the 'ad1' Twig variable.

{% code overflow="wrap" %}

```twig
<!-- Query for Newsletter Ad Units and load first one into ad variable. -->
[% set ad1 = fetchdata('https://myfeedurlthatreturnsJSON', '{}')[0] %]
```

{% endcode %}

You can use standard twig notation to display, loop, manipulate the contents of the ad1 variable. The following code shows a few different options:

* Dump the raw contents of ad1 to see the data
* Display each field individually (notation will change based on the JSON data structure)
* Display fields in basic HTML
* Using conditionals to display a fallback ad/image/html block when there is no data in the ad1 variable.

```html
<!-- You can dump the ad1 contents for review,debug purposes -->
 <p>Debug: [[ ad1 | json_encode ]]</p>
<!-- Conditional to show ad or default html when ad is not present -->
[% if ad1 and ad1|length >0 %]
<!-- Sample Display All Data -->
[[ad1.title]]
[[ad1.title_url]]
[[ad1.logo_url]]
[[ad1.logo_link]]
[[ad1.links[0].text]]
[[ad1.links[0].url]]
<!-- Sample Styled HTML Ouput -->
<div>
<a href="[[ad1.title_url]]">[[ad1[0].title]]</a><br/>
<a href="[[ad1.logo_url]]" target="_blank">
<img src='[[ad1.logo_url]]' />
</a>
</div>
[% else %]
<div>
<a href="[[custom.topFallbackUrl]]"><img src='[[custom.topFallbackSrc]]'/></a>
</div>
[% endif %]
<p>## end json api display ##</p>
```

# Troubleshooting

# Marketo Duplicate Object Naming

Marketo is very picky about unique names. A common reason for not being able to publish is that there is already a Program or Email with the same name in your Marketo instance.

To resolve this you have two options:

1. Delete the "same-named" item in Marketo and attempt to publish again.
2. Rename your FeedOtter Issue (add a number, letter etc..) and re-publish

Either approach should resolve this error and let your publish complete successfully.

Below you will find a step by step walkthrough of both resolutions.

### Delete Duplicate Program and/or Emails in Marketo

In Marketo, search the "tree" for anything with the same name as the issue name listed above, delete or rename it. Then attempt to publish again.

### Rename your FeedOtter issue

Close this popup, click the small **"edit"** next to the Name field and modify the name to be more unique. Add an extra number, letter, etc...

**Other Marketo Troubleshooting Topics:**

* Delete any Email Programs and Emails in Marketing Activites with the same name as the cpgn you are trying to publish.
* Navigate to Design Studio > Email Templates > Search for the TMPL file with a name similar to your newsletter. Unapprove it, Edit, delete all code, approve and close. Retry your publish
* Contact the FO team for help. We can locate the exact Marketo error and troubleshoot this with you via a quick Zoom call.

# Marketo Emoji Support

If you are receiving an error when publishing your newsletter to Marketo. You may receive notification that it is caused by the presence of emojis in your email.

Marketo supports only a very outdated standard for emojis (unicode 5.2) so most emojis that a you add will not be supported in Marketo.

To publish to Marketo, please revise your content and remove emojis, then try to publish again.

# MailChimp From Address

When publishing and scheduling an email from FeedOtter to MailChimp it is important that the FROM EMAIL specified in FeedOtter be setup as a valid sending email in MailChimp.

### To Adjust The From Address in FeedOtter

* Click on the subjectline/from area above the email preview.
* Edit the From and Reply-To Email addresses

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/V0XlIoFJb3ZB8HNICEur" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

# Pardot emails are missing a required Unsubscribe or Preference Center tag

Pardot requires that all emails have a valid Unsubscribe or Preference Center Link token in both the HTML and TEXT versions of the email.

Follow this article to ensure your email compiles.

### Verify tags in HTML version

* In FeedOtter, navigate to the Edit view of your Issue or Campaign.
* Click on **Customize** from the left side tab bar.
* Click on the **Code** tab.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/I7SDXSR2Kxc3cOVXirLH" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

By default this will display the HTML email code.

Above the code box there is search interface. Use this to search for the following texts:

* unsubscribe
* emailpreference
* \[\[feedotter.unsubscribe\_link]]

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/IsTYYaGtSAzyqvsugtbO" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

If the \[\[feedotter.unsubscribe\_link]] is present your HTML code is compliant and you can move on to checking the Text version.

When you search for the other variants, you MUST have something like this {{Unsubscribe}} or {{EmailPreferenceCenter}}.  These are the Pardot specific tokens that are required. &#x20;

If none of these values are present in your email you will need to add them to your email before it can be published to Pardot.

### Verify tags in TEXT version

Same process as above except we change the code view to the TEXT code view.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/7qkoGuGhWQ1VuLkKr9XI" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Ensuring one of the supported tags is present will allow your email to be published.

# Marketo

Publish newsletters in minutes by integrating FeedOtter with Marketo.

[Marketo](http://www.marketo.com/) is a powerful marketing automation platform that supports B2B marketing and lead management, customer engagement marketing, real-time personalization, and marketing management. FeedOtter is an offical Marketo partner and was built originally for Marketo. To solve a number of problems with the other "leading" tool. Today, FeedOtter is the most-used solution for Marketo marketers that want to automate and streamline their newsletters and blog digest emails.

# How to Set Up Your Marketo Integration

To complete your integration, follow the steps below.

## Connecting Your Marketo Account to FeedOtter

Setting up a new Marketo integration is relatively straightforward. It involves creating a new user with API-only access and a custom service which will allow FeedOtter to authenticate against your Marketo account. We created this condensed help topic based on documentation [provided by Marketo here](http://developers.marketo.com/documentation/rest/custom-service/).

### About Marketo REST API Credentials

Marketo connects to FeedOtter using secure REST API endpoints and permissions similar to many other Marketo integrations. If you have integrated other Marketo add-ons you will find this process familiar. If you need assistance, we've created a helpful guide that will walk you through the entire process.

### Create A Marketo API Role <a href="#headline-157-446" id="headline-157-446"></a>

The first step is to create a Marketo API Role. Go to the Admin area of your Marketo account, select Users & Roles from the left-side menu.

![Add Your Marketo REST API credentials](https://www.feedotter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/menu-users-and-roles.jpg)

Create a new role. This role will contain the permissions specific to the Marketo API user we will create next. Select Roles at the top of your screen and click the New Role button.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/oqtIMoIdI4Zo9nFR8fF5" alt="Create a new Marketo integration role"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Give the new role a name and description. In this example we called it “API Role” to remind us in the future why it was created. Under permissions, expand the Access API section and check the following 2 permissions:

* Approve Assets
* Read-Write Assets

Then click the Save button.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/vZCdjzck830ZGLwJLvI7" alt="Setup a Marketo integration user role"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

These basic permissions will allow FeedOtter to access the Marketo email API in order to create, update, and approve new emails in your Marketo account.

### Create An API User <a href="#headline-174-446" id="headline-174-446"></a>

Now create an API-only user. This is the user account FeedOtter will use to authenticate against the Marketo API. Navigate to the Users tab, and click the Invite New User button.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/yXtbjAGDt7Unq6BZE0Kq" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

This dialog will come up – fill in the details according to the screen shot below.\
\
It’s important that you select the API Role you just created above, as well as checking the API Only checkbox. This will ensure that FeedOtter can only access your data through the API and can’t log in directly to the application.\
\
NOTE: The email address is a placeholder value to track Marketo API usage. You will need to use your own email address such as "<api@yourdomain.com>." Whether you choose to monitor this account is up to you – generally you shouldn’t need to.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/MBZy3j5ysNnR9GBbH9h7" alt="Add Your Marketo REST API credentials"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/G10hEW5RDLEDKHUTPqib" alt="Select a Marketo integration api user"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

{% hint style="danger" %}
API Only: Be sure to check API only check box.
{% endhint %}

### Create A Custom Service <a href="#headline-194-446" id="headline-194-446"></a>

Now that you’ve created a user with access to the API, you need a custom service to identify the application (FeedOtter) to Marketo.\
While still in Admin, navigate to LaunchPoint on the left sidebar.

![Add Your Marketo REST API credentials](https://www.feedotter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/menu-launchpoint.jpg)

Under Installed Services, click the New button.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/WUJYWe0G7b95FamPveFj" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

This will bring up the New Service dialog. Fill out the dialog with the values shown below. Make sure and select the API only user which you created in the previous step.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/QdoZAUwYI3sIWlgvThOR" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Marketo API Credentials <a href="#headline-213-446" id="headline-213-446"></a>

Setup in Marketo is now complete. You’ve created a role providing access to the API, and created a user assigned to that role. You’ve also created a new service to provide authentication to the FeedOtter platform.\
\
To view the authentication credentials, click the View Details link in the service list for the FeedOtter service you just created.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/Am9rE1u8zruMiPysxJWV" alt="Add Your Marketo REST API credentials"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

FeedOtter needs the Client Id and Client Secret values you see in the dialog that comes up. You will use them in the FeedOtter connection setup in the next section.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/dzD1IlAppTSipbI2nDnq" alt="Add Your Marketo REST API credentials"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Webservice URL <a href="#headline-225-446" id="headline-225-446"></a>

FeedOtter uses Marketo’s REST API. Different Marketo customers have different URLs for accessing the API, and FeedOtter needs those URLs in order to function correctly.\
\
The URL's specific to your account are located under Web Services in the admin menu.

![Add Your Marketo REST API credentials](https://www.feedotter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/menu-web-services.jpg)

There is a section on the page called REST API with two values: Endpoint and Identity. **FeedOtter only needs the URL labeled Endpoint.**

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/h8MGqiCl0DgBS2VsO9es" alt="Add Your Marketo REST API credentials"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Configuration in Marketo is complete and you should have the three values FeedOtter requires for a successful integration:

* Client ID
* Client Secret
* REST API endpoint URL

### Add Your Marketo Credentials to FeedOtter <a href="#headline-240-446" id="headline-240-446"></a>

Return to FeedOtter and click **Settings** in the upper-right corner.

* Select **Integrations** from the left menu bar
* Click the **Add Integration** button
* Enter the Marketo details collected in the previous steps

{% hint style="info" %}
If you have the Marketo Workspaces feature you should carefully paste the exact text name of your **Workspace** as seen in the Marketing Activities tree view. For all other users this field should be left untouched.
{% endhint %}

* Follow the additional steps below.&#x20;

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/77EH1Nh7MbrhE1gFzshJ" alt="Marketo Connection setup details"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

You’ll now see some additional fields as of 2025:

* A check box for legacy usage
* Subscription
* Munchkin ID

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/4u9l2eajIbGPqbqyDUM3" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### What you need to do

If you are still using the previous login system ("old" Marketo):

* Leave the "Use Legacy URLs" box checked.
* You do not need to change anything else.

\
&#x20;If you are using the new Marketo login system:

* Uncheck the “Use Legacy URLs” box.
* Fill in your Subscription and Munchkin ID.

{% hint style="info" %}
The “previous login system (old Marketo)” vs. the “new Marketo login system,” refers to the recent transition Marketo has made to Adobe’s authentication system.

If your instance is still using the legacy login system (the original Marketo-specific authentication), URLs and login behavior will remain unchanged.&#x20;
{% endhint %}

To location the Subscription and Munchkin ID, click the My Account tab within your Marketo:

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/SEMO8FpV4Th5ftGsNcF2" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Then, under **Admin,** navigate to **My Account.** Here you will find the **Subscription** and **Munchkin ID** within the **Support Information** box:

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/xWgsDa0MOAEUIsgW22ux" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Once the Subscription and Munchkin ID are input within FeedOtter, Save and close the window. All links etc. should work as expected.<br>

\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\
\
You can access your Marketo connection settings at any time by clicking **Settings** the upper-right of FeedOtter and choosing **Integrations**.

{% hint style="success" %}
This connection process is a one-time task and will never expire or need to be re-connected as long as it is present in Marketo.
{% endhint %}

### Use Smart Campaigns to Engage Subscribers (active/inactive) <a href="#headline-88-20978" id="headline-88-20978"></a>

A great way to extend your automated RSS emails with Marketo is to use the awesome Smart Campaign functionality of Marketo to watch and engage as your automated emails are sent.

Our two favorite Smart Campaigns are:

**#1 - Watch all automated RSS emails and email subscribers who have not clicked content in the last 60 days.**

We will then trigger an email send to these subscribers asking if they would like to remain on our list.

**#2 - Watch our emails for subscribers that voraciously consume our content, clicking on more than 10 posts in a 30-day period.**

We send these folks an email asking them if they would like to collaborate on an upcoming content piece. This could be an offer to write a guest blog post or sometimes we will interview the reader about their content marketing and current goals either way it is a great way to engage people that love your content.

# Sending in Recipient Time Zone

**Ever wondered what the "Recipient Time Zone" option below your Marketo scheduler is for?**

When sending marketing emails, one of the biggest questions is: **What’s the best time to send this carefully crafted email?**

There’s plenty of research and blog posts about the optimal time for maximizing open and engagement rates. But what if your recipients are spread across multiple time zones?

Luckily for Marketo users, the **Recipient Time Zone** feature ensures that your emails are sent at the exact scheduled time **in each recipient’s local time zone**. This means you can optimize delivery without worrying about time zone differences—Marketo takes care of it for you.

## How Recipient Time Zones Work in Marketo

Marketo calculates the recipient time zone by looking at their city, state, country, or zip code fields. If not filled in, Marketo will use inferred city/state/country/zip code fields. While you can’t directly update a contact’s time zone, updating any of the above location fields will allow Marketo to better determine the time zone to use for sending your emails.

Ultimately, if Marketo cannot determine your recipient’s time zone, they will default to sending based on your subscription’s time zone. Don't worry too much though, as Marketo has plenty of resources and checks before defaulting to your subscription’s time zone.

## How to Set Up Recipient Time Zone Sending

The option to use recipient time zones will be available when you schedule your email send. Just create and schedule your email, and then check the box directly below the scheduler for **Recipient Time Zone**.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/GUGf26ym0VupjRbG3yao" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Now with scheduling your Marketo email, there are two scenarios that can occur and will affect how/when the email is sent to each subscriber.

## Scenario 1: Scheduled within 25 hours

If your email is scheduled to go out in less than 25 hours from the current time, there may be recipients on your smart list that have already passed the scheduled time in their time zone. Not a problem, as Marketo gives you a couple options for when these recipients should receive your email.

**Deliver the following day in recipient’s time zone:** If the scheduled time has already passed for the user, you can opt to wait and send the email to that recipient the following day at the time scheduled.

**Deliver using program’s default set time:** The recipient will receive the email at the time you’ve scheduled in your time zone, meaning the email will be sent to this recipient at the time you’ve scheduled in your subscription’s time zone, no matter what time it will be for the recipient.

1. After selecting **Recipient Time Zone**, click the **Gear** icon that appears to the right.
2. Select one of the following options(explained above) and click **Save**.
3. **Approve** the program and your email will start to run.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/YNXuRnRGihIaBrhQD0mF" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

## Scenario 2: Scheduled more than 25 hours out

If your email is scheduled more than 25 hours in advance, then you’re all set! Marketo will be able to send to each recipient at your scheduled time in their time zone with no additional steps.

NOTE: Marketo will only show the **Gear icon** if your email is scheduled for less than 25 hours from your current time, so need to worry or do extra math when scheduling your emails.

## How to use with FeedOtter emails

[Automating your emails with FeedOtter](https://www.feedotter.com/marketo/) but still want to send your emails using recipient time zone? Not a problem. Once you’ve [created your automated newsletter](https://docs.feedotter.com/automated-newsletters/getting-started), follow the steps below:

1. Go to your **Marketo** account > **Marketing Activities**.
2. Find your **FeedOtter program** > ***### – FeedOtter Setup*** email program.
3. Check the **Recipient Time Zone** box on your setup program. This setting will carry over for all future emails.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/a1CuW5cnamoPRtPtE58x" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Since FeedOtter emails are scheduled and sent via Marketo at the time you schedule in FeedOtter, this will cause the email to be sending in **Scenario 1**. In this case, Marketo defaults to the first option of **delivering the following day in the recipient’s time zone**.

Now you’re all set! No more worrying about your broad recipient list, your emails will be sent at the right time for your recipient.

# Marketo Data Access

Review the Marketo permissions and access roles required by FeedOtter.

Security is important to us at FeedOtter. We’ve worked closely with Marketo’s API team to ensure we have access to as little of your data as possible. Here you can read what Marketo data FeedOtter has access to.

### Marketo API / Role Permissions Needed <a href="#headline-139-21033" id="headline-139-21033"></a>

FeedOtter requires **two** permissions to operate. Both of them pertain only to Marketo Assets:

* **Approve Assets** — used to approve emails in your Marketo account.
* **Read-Write Assets** — used to create emails, email templates, folders, default programs, and email programs in your Marketo account.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/EAjPsrU8zjGOWP2Vb7LV" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

In certain advanced Marketo installations that use Workspaces, FeedOtter may also require permission to create emails and email templates in the Design Studio. These permissions look like this:

* **Access Design Studio**
  * Access Emails
    * Edit Email&#x20;
    * Approve Email
  * Access Email Template
    * Approve Email Template
    * Edit Email Template

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://www.feedotter.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Marketo-Security-Workspace-with-Design-Studio.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Leads and Personal Information <a href="#headline-149-21033" id="headline-149-21033"></a>

{% hint style="warning" %}
FeedOtter NEVER accesses your leads, email addresses, employees, or company information. We only create and manipulate assets.
{% endhint %}

# Custom Marketo Program Naming

When integrating your FeedOtter emails with Marketo, FeedOtter by default names your email campaigns using the default Marketo language (EMP, EM) and appends the unique date and timestamp to ensure API calls complete without error on an ongoing process. Now, you can use custom program naming in FeedOtter to create unique email names in your Marketo account. Here, I’ll walk you through how to use FeedOtter’s new custom program naming in Marketo.

NOTE: This feature is only accessible with our Business plan or above. Please ensure your [FeedOtter plan](https://www.feedotter.com/kb/upgrade-my-plan/) is compatible with the new naming feature before continuing.

#### Custom Program Naming in FeedOtter Email

The first step is to login to your[ FeedOtter account](https://app.feedotter.com/home).

You can [create a new automated email](https://www.feedotter.com/support/how-to-send-rss-email-from-marketo/) here, or edit a preexisting campaign.

Next, click the **Settings** tab in the left sidebar toward the bottom.&#x20;

Navigate to the **Custom Naming** section:

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/0rdcvuu7Etfm6bbaczB9" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Type the **Campaign Name** and **Email Name** you wish to use for your email.

{% hint style="warning" %}
One thing to keep in mind with custom naming in Marketo is that **it requires unique names**. If you set up custom naming without a **date/time token**, you may run into issues due to Marketo’s **“Duplicate Name”** requirement, which can cause failures.
{% endhint %}

To mitigate this, FeedOtter will always append a unique timestamp to the end of any custom naming text. For example, *“EMEA – EM – 0987”* will appear in Marketo as *“EMA – EM – 0987 202204050923”*

#### Custom Program Naming in Marketo

Now that you’ve set up your automated email and scheduled it, go to your [Marketo account](https://app-ab04.marketo.com/).

Go to **Marketing Activities** > **FeedOtter Programs.**

Expand the email campaign brown folder. Here, you’ll see the custom program naming in Marketo for each email program and email send with the time stamp appended to the end. The unique date and time stamp is, by default, appended to the end of each email program and email send to ensure API calls complete without error on an ongoing process.

![Custom Program Naming in Marketo](https://www.feedotter.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/custom-program-naming-in-Marketo.png)

# Branded Domain and IP Settings

Branded domain and IP settings are fully supported in FeedOtter emails. Once your newsletter is initialized locate the **### Email Setup** email program in Marketo and the edit the email attached.

Set the branded domain and IP as desired.

![](/files/P1kG8jhVuMeccqbfXX5W)

Save an approve the email. These settings will be cloned on all future emails.

Steps to repair an automated campaign if it becomes disconnected from FeedOtter and gives you an HTMLid error.

FeedOtter is the most reliable way to automate rss and blog newsletters with Marketo, that said it is possible for an automation to disconnect. To solve this we need to reset the campaign's email with a few short steps in your Marketo account.

{% hint style="info" %}
FeedOtter creates and manages several email templates in your Marketo account. It is important these emails are NEVER modified manually as this can interrupt FeedOtter’s ability to automate email sending.
{% endhint %}

### Step 1.

In FeedOtter, locate the affected FeedOtter automated campaign:

* **Edit** the affected campaign
* Select **Integrations** from the left side menu
* Click on **Open Marketo ### Setup Email Program**

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/jZXLioQNtUjWmWFlLdzC" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

This will open Marketo and take you to the related campaign.

{% hint style="info" %}
Keep this FeedOtter window open, we will return to this exact spot in Step 3.
{% endhint %}

### Step 2.

In Marketo:&#x20;

* Ensure the Email Program ### - FeedOtter Setup is selected. (This should be automatic if you followed the link in FeedOtter as described above)
* In the Emails Box, deselect the email
* Right click on the email child of the ### Setup Program and select Unapprove
* Right click on the same email and delete it.

### Step 3.

Return to FeedOtter: &#x20;

### Back Up and Running!

At this point your campaign is re-linked to FeedOtter and future runs will return to normal. If you have any questions or encounter other errors during this reset process please contact our support team. We are happy to jump on a call and walk through this with you.

# Marketo Error: Program with the same name exists

When publishing curated emails, ensure each email has a unique name, as Marketo requires this to take place.

# Marketo error: Daily quota '50000'

Client API limits Reached

**Overview:**

Campaign error sending - Marketo error: Daily quota '50000'

**Cause:**

Limit of API calls in Marketo has been used.

**Resolution:**\
This will resolve itself once the limits reset (typically Daily). No action is needed unless the error happens multiple days in a row.&#x20;

**If the error continues:**

FeedOtter will start working again once that limit is reset.\
\
A workaround would be to pull the HTML from FeedOtter and copy it into Marketo.\
\
To do that workaround: Click **Edit Campaign > Settings > Download HTML**

# Marketo Error: Invalid request. Please check and try again.

**Modules Affected:**

* Automated
* Curated
* SendNow

**Causes:**

* Marketo workspaces is not setup correctly. If your Marketo account is using Workspaces ensure FeedOtter is properly configured to create assets in them correctly.
* Trying to publish a curated newsletter to a Default(brown) Program with name starting with number e.g. "06 - June Monthly Newsletter" fails but "June Monthly Newsletter" works.

# Curated Issue Fails to Publish

Curated newsletters may fail to publish to Marketo for a variety of reasons. Below are the most common causes and how resolve them.

{% hint style="success" %}
If you need to publish your newsletter right now. Look at the bottom of the Publish screen in FeedOtter. You will see an option to access the raw email HTML code. You can copy and paste this code into a new Marketo email manually for an immediate send.
{% endhint %}

Here are several of the most common reasons and suggested solutions on resolving these types of issues.&#x20;

# FeedOtter Can Not Approve Marketo Template

Curated newsletters may fail to publish to Marketo for a variety of reasons. Below are the most common causes and how resolve them.

{% hint style="success" %}
If you need to publish your newsletter right now. Look at the bottom of the Publish screen in FeedOtter. You will see an option to access the raw email HTML code. You can copy and paste this code into a new Marketo email manually for an immediate send.
{% endhint %}

### Reset the Design Studio Template

1. Navigate to the Marketo Design Studio
2. Expand Email Templates
3. Browse or Search to find an email templated named the same as your FO newsletter. For example if your newsletter is named:

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/akJNXG0MG5GUBI4R1ktm" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

You should look in Marketo for an Email Template with the same name:

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/YcTTN5nn3sLu1uHDyjeE" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

If the template is "Unapproved" or "Has a Draft". Please discard the draft, and ensure the template file has an Approved status.

Return to FeedOtter and try to publish your Curated Newsletter again. In many cases this will restore your integration.

###

# Marketo rejects Duplicate Name

Duplicate Name

Another common reason for a publishing fail is Marketo's duplicate naming check.

Try to change the name of your newsletter in the FeedOtter interface:

<figure><img src="/files/5jAA6KX2zPtcaPl7K9qz" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Try adding the text "v2", click the checkmark to save and try publishing again.

# Exporting a FeedOtter email into Marketo

Having issues publishing directly to Marketo via the integration? Reached your API limit and need to send an email quick? Export the HTML from FeedOtter and create an email directly in Marketo.

Although we have a solid API integration with Marketo, sometimes issues can arise and we're unable to send the email to your Marketo instance.&#x20;

Marketo will always provide an error message that we'll share with you, but unfortunately this error message coming from their API can often be vague and confusing. Another use case we see is a customer's daily API rate limit is met before we can send the email, so the customer will need to find a new way to send their email.

In these cases, we recommend exporting the FeedOtter email and creating the email directly in Marketo. For the API limit, this will allow you to bypass our API calls and send directly via Marketo and if you're seeing an error message from Marketo, you can typically receive a more accurate, thorough description of the error when creating a Marketo email.

### Exporting the FeedOtter Email

#### Automated Email Campaigns

If you're trying to send an automated email newsletter, you'll want to **Edit Campaign** and ensure the email preview looks correct.&#x20;

{% hint style="info" %}
You can change the number of posts under **RSS Feeds** to ensure it's only showing new posts when you export the HTML. The preview by default shows your max amount of posts you have selected, not just new posts. etc..
{% endhint %}

Next, go to the **Settings** tab&#x20;

# Pardot / Account Engagement

Connect FeedOtter with Pardot for fast and easy newsletter publishing.

Pardot, Salesforce’s B2B marketing automation platform, streamlines lead generation, nurturing, and ROI tracking. FeedOtter enhances Pardot with seamless RSS-to-email integration, automating content delivery and simplifying the sending process.

# How to Set Up Your Pardot Integration

To complete your integration, follow the steps below.

## Connecting Your Account Engagement Account to FeedOtter

{% hint style="warning" %}
This guide assumes you are using the Lightning version of Pardot. If you are using an older version of Pardot, you may need to request help from Pardot to find the required Ids.
{% endhint %}

In FeedOtter, navigate to **Settings > Integrations**. Then, click **Add Integration:**<br>

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/baF5eNFxa5S5ppOMKKJA" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Select **Pardot**. Fill in the required fields:

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/Q4EOKdaOFuXjYC2n2M7f" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

* **Api Version** should be **4** unless you know differently.
* To access your **Pardot Business Unit Id**, navigate to Salesforce (see below). In the upper-right corner, click the gear icon, then click Setup. Use the Quick Find search bar in the left-side menu to search "Business Unit Setup," or navigate under Account Engagement.&#x20;

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/C2SWiGYYyeC31NFC2EbZ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

* Select **Environment** (currently FeedOtter requires a Production Pardot instance for integration). *Production* should be selected by default.&#x20;
* **Use Handlebars** should be *checked* by default. Leave it checked unless you know differently.
* Click **Save.**

If a series of prompts appear, click *Yes* on the various prompts to authorize the FeedOtter Connected App. When/if this happens and is completed, you should be returned to the FeedOtter settings screen.

The integration is complete at this point.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**The more thorough approach to Integration:** The other method for integration creates a dedicated user account that **isn’t** directly linked to an individual. While this is the preferred option, it does involve a more detailed process. To ensure the account is independent of any one person, you can use your Admin to set up a dedicated user. Click the link below to walk through this process.

# Can I add completion actions to emails created by FeedOtter in Pardot?

If you have a goal of tracking daily email engagement (per unique account) in an automated way, read more here.

### Answer:&#x20;

The short answer is no. It is not currently possible to automatically add completion actions to emails created by FeedOtter in Pardot.

If you need to associate completion actions with these emails, you would have to manually edit each email within Pardot after FeedOtter creates them.

# Salesforce IP Whitelisting

Ensure Salesforce and FeedOtter can communnicate through advanced security configuration

Some Salesforce accounts may have an IP address whitelist for connected apps and/or users. If you receive an error when trying to send emails from FeedOtter after completing the steps above, please contact your Salesforce admin and ask them to whitelist our IP address: **104.236.230.137**

# Pardot Data Access

Securely connect your Pardot account to FeedOtter to enable email automation features.

Security is important to us at FeedOtter. We’ve worked closely with Pardot’s API team to ensure we have access to as little of your data as possible. This information will allow you to understand what Pardot data FeedOtter has access to.

### API Access <a href="#headline-27-20783" id="headline-27-20783"></a>

FeedOtter is integrated with the latest Salesforce / Pardot SSO login and Api authentication. You have full control over the FeedOtter integration at all times.

### API Methods Used <a href="#headline-136-20783" id="headline-136-20783"></a>

Besides those used for authentication, FeedOtter for Pardot utilizes 3 separate REST API methods:

1. &#x20;**lists** — a read-only call to provide the user with a UI for selecting the Pardot list(s) emails should be sent to. The call returns only list names, and numerical id numbers. No contact information is available. For more information read Pardot's API guide: <http://developer.pardot.com/kb/api-version-4/lists/>
2. **campaigns** — a read-only call to provide a UI for selecting the Pardot Campaign used for reporting on email sends. The call returns campaign names and numerical id numbers. No contact information is available. For more information read Pardot's API guide: <http://developer.pardot.com/kb/api-version-4/campaigns/>
3. &#x20;**emails.send** — a write call that passes list and campaign ids along with HTML content to your Pardot account for the purpose of creating a new email. This call includes a date/time which denotes when the email will be sent by Pardot. No contact information is exchanged other than the TO, FROM, REPLY-TO text provided by your team as part of the email creation process in FeedOtter. For more information refer to Pardot's API documentation: <http://developer.pardot.com/kb/api-version-4/>

### FeedOtter Encryption <a href="#headline-62-20783" id="headline-62-20783"></a>

All pertinent user and account data is encrypted using AES256. This includes passwords, email addresses, api tokens, keys, and associated data.

FeedOtter's user/login password scheme uses PBKDF2.

There is no use of MD5 or Sha hashing.

### Prospects and Personal Information <a href="#headline-161-20783" id="headline-161-20783"></a>

FeedOtter NEVER accesses your leads, email addresses, employees, or company information. As described in the previous section, we perform read-only queries to provide UI elements and a single-write operation to create a new scheduled email asset.

# Advanced Settings

# Connect to Account Engagement with an Identity User Account

**This is the more thorough approach to Integration.** This method creates a dedicated user account that isn’t directly linked to an individual. While this is the preferred option, it does involve a more detailed process.

{% hint style="warning" %}
This guide assumes you are using the Lightning version of Pardot. If you are using an older version of Pardot, you may need to request help from Pardot to find the required Ids.
{% endhint %}

Here is an overview of the steps:

* Create a new Salesforce user with an Identity License.
* Create a Pardot user with the same email as your Identity License Salesforce user.
* Ensure the Salesforce and Pardot user are linked.

{% hint style="info" %}
Our approach follows the Salesforce best practices outlined in their guide here: <https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/marketing/pardot/guide/getting-started.html>
{% endhint %}

### Set Up a Salesforce Identity User

The best way to integrate FeedOtter with Salesforce Pardot is to create a unique user in Salesforce with an [Identity License](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sf.identity_licenses.htm\&language=en_US\&type=5). This is a special user license that is included with your Pardot license.

* In Salesforce click the gear and go to **Setup** > **Users**&#x20;

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/Xo3jz8wVzSGGSgLLkRXO" alt="" width="177"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

* Click **New User**
* Create a new user with an email address that you can access. You will need to setup a password and verify this new user. We recommend something like <feedotter-api@your-company.com> or <first.last+feedotterapi@yourcompany.com>

{% hint style="info" %}
Using an email address like <jessica+feedotter@feedotter.com> will receive email at <jessica@feedotter.com>. The "+feedotter" is discarded for email receipt purposes. This works with most modern email systems but if you do not receive the activation email your company email may not allow this.
{% endhint %}

We recommend setting the **Role** to something marketing related but this should not impact api connectivity. Ensure that the new Salesforce user has a **User License = Identity** and **Profile = Identity User (see below).**&#x20;

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/l7hnLmy0jhpjaDSixlIJ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

<figure><img src="/files/ydr9s7s8ueVl2kkj69iY" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Verify the account of this new user and setup a password as necessary.

### Set Up A Pardot User

<figure><img src="/files/Ijye1lda0TwOTXXz82fs" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

1. On the primary Lightning toolbar (main Pardot page) locate and navigate: **Account Engagement Settings** > **User Management** > **Users** > **Add User**
2. Create a new Pardot user **using the same email used for the Salesforce user created above**. Making sure the CRM Username field is **mapped to the Salesforce Identify User** you created above.
3. The Role should be **Administrator** or **Marketing**

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/OLbGr5eC5mylYaOnGh2A" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

4. In the new Pardot user look for a blue link labeled **Enable SSO / Single Sign On** click this.

At this point you are ready to connect your FeedOtter account to Salesforce Pardot. Please logout of all Salesforce / Pardot instances in your browser and have the user and password of the Salesforce Identity User ready for use.

Refer to this guide to finish the Integration:&#x20;

# Troubleshooting

While the Pardot authentication process will go smoothly for most users. Here are several common issues and their resolutions:

### While trying to authorize you get stranded at a blank page saying "error".

*This can occur if your organization has Salesforce settings that restrict access to outside applications like FeedOtter.*&#x20;

*The solution is to ask your Salesforce admin to "whitelist" FeedOtter's application IP address.* [*Please fill out our support form*](https://www.feedotter.com/contact-support/) *to request the IP addresses.*

### Authorization works and clicking "test" results in a green dot but when I try to select my lists in a campaign I see red error popups.

*This typically occurs if you are using the wrong version of the Pardot API. By default we recommend selecting "version 4". However, if you see errors you can likely resolve them by changing the version to "3".*

1. *Navigate to **Settings > Integration.***
2. *Click **Edit** next to your Pardot connection.*
3. *In the popup, change the "Api Version" value to "3".*
4. *Click **Save.***

### **You can create a new connection and can see your lists/campaigns in FeedOtter but receive an error when FeedOtter tries to schedule an email.**

*We are working with the Pardot team to investigate this situation.*

*Things to try:*

* *Ensure the Salesforce user you are trying to authorize with is a Pardot Admin or Marketing role user. (Pardot Admin UI)*
* *Ensure that the Salesforce user has Pardot Salesforce permissions (Salesforce User Mgmt > Roles)*

### **When trying to save your new Pardot SSO connection in FeedOtter you are not prompted to login to Salesforce and returned to FeedOtter's integration page and clicking test results in a 'red' error.**

*This means something is not correct between your Salesforce and Pardot permissions. The typical error message in this circumstance if "Wrong API Credentials".*

*Possible causes:*

* *Your Pardot and Salesforce user is not connected. Check Pardot Settings > Users and Salesforce Users to ensure the user in question exists in both spaces.*
* *You are using the GROWTH edition and do not have REST api access on your Pardot license.*
* *The businessId is incorrect. Please ensure to COPY AND PASTE the businessId value from Pardot to FeedOtter as some characters may be hard to re-type correctly.*

### **Your Pardot connection was authenticated and working but has suddenly disconnected.**

*We are currently exploring potential causes for this but suspect it is related to your Salesforce permissions. Please let us know if you are experiencing this issue.*

# Eloqua

Link FeedOtter and Eloqua for fast, simple newsletter publishing.

Eloqua, Oracle's marketing automation platform, helps businesses streamline marketing, engage audiences, and drive revenue. Widely used by B2B companies, it enables targeted, personalized campaigns across multiple channels. FeedOtter enhances Eloqua with efficient RSS-to-email integration, automating content delivery and optimizing the email creation process.

To connect your FeedOtter account to Eloqua, start here:

{% content-ref url="/pages/ZVTE2PFD5camDHVEoP4Z" %}
[How to Set Up Your Eloqua Integration](/integrations/eloqua/how-to-set-up-your-eloqua-integration)
{% endcontent-ref %}

# How to Set Up Your Eloqua Integration

In FeedOtter, navigate to **Settings > Integrations**.

<figure><img src="/files/mBrwiJP77ocqwE2AejGW" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### <mark style="color:blue;">Option 1:</mark> Connect using your personal Eloqua user account

This option is useful if you are testing FeedOtter or want your campaigns up and running immediately. This is the fastest approach.

* Click **Add Integration,** and give it a memorable name. For example, "Eloqua Connection James&#x20;
* Click the **Save.** You will be taken to Eloqua and asked to give FeedOtter access to your Eloqua instance.
* FeedOtter is connected. You can test the connection by pressing the TEST button on the FeedOtter Integrations page next to your specific connection.

### <mark style="color:blue;">Option 2:</mark> Connect using a Dedicated API User

This is the preferred method for long-term stability and is also the most secure method. It does require knowledge of the Eloqua admin settings area and access to create new users.

Here are the recommended steps:

#### Create a Security Group for FeedOtter API Access

1. Create a new security group and name it "FeedOtter API Connection Group" or something similar. The exact name does not matter.
2. The following properties should be set to ensure FeedOtter can create and automate email sends via your Eloqua account:

   1. **Licensing** - *Eloqua Marketing Platform* should be *checked*.
   2. **Asset Creation -** *Campaigns and Emails* should be *checked.*
   3. **Default Asset Permissions:**

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/BRuS0zZtfl9JsdlCAoXT" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

At this point your security group is ready to go and configured with the minimal permissions FeedOtter needs. The next step is to add a user and configure that to belong to the new security group.

#### Add an API-Only User

1. Set up a new user, and add them to the custom security group you just created.
2. Under licensing, ensure Eloqua Marketing Platform is checked.
3. We recommend ensuring the user's password does not expire.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/Lwqyy9PxmkGpX8oJcaQI" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Now you can log out of all Eloqua accounts and return to Option 1 above. Complete those steps but login with the API-only user you just created. This will establish a connection that will not be reliant on an individual user's account.

At this point you are ready to set up your RSS and/or curated newsletters using the following tutorials:

* [Getting Started](/automations/getting-started) (Automated Newsletters)
* [Broken mention](broken://pages/wp9CWnlsAU53UvvWdcZ3) (Curated Newsletters)
